JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Medicine in Hershey, PA is seeking a part-time Project Management Associate with specialized expertise in American Indian Tribal research to provide consulting support to the Van Scoy Communication Lab. This position supports an NIH-funded community-based participatory research project focused on culturally adapting advance care planning interventions in partnership with the Washoe Tribe.

POSITION DETAILS:

This is a part-time Project Management Associate position at approximately 1 hour per week or 3-4 hours per month. The position provides specialized research consulting rather than direct project execution.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Project Management Associate will provide expert guidance and consultation in the following areas:

  • Research methodology consulting for conducting culturally appropriate research with American Indian tribes
  • Guidance on data analysis approaches that honor Tribal sovereignty and cultural protocols
  • Consultation on culturally responsive research practices essential to maintaining ethical standards in community-based participatory research
  • Advisement on compliance with Tribal research protocols and IRB requirements
  • Strategic guidance on maintaining trust and reciprocal relationships with Tribal partners
  • Review and feedback on research materials, consent processes, and participant engagement strategies
  • Consultation on methodological decisions fundamental to meeting grant deliverables
  • Other consulting duties as needed to support the integrity of the Tribal partnership

IMPACT AND IMPORTANCE:

This position plays a critical role in the success of this community-based participatory research project. The specialized knowledge and experience with American Indian Tribes ensures compliance with Tribal research protocols, maintains trust with our Tribal partners, and guides methodological decisions that are fundamental to meeting the grant's deliverables. The negative impact of not filling this position would be severe - the loss of expertise would jeopardize our ability to conduct culturally competent research with the Washoe Tribe, potentially compromise our partnership and project timeline, and could result in failure to meet NIH grant requirements.
