Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Patient Care Services/Shift Manager/Designee, the Registered Nurse provides direct patient care to pediatric through geriatric patient populations.  Addresses the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment.  Responsible for the preoperative preparation of patients, including baseline assessment, skin preparation as required, and completion of the surgical checklist.  Responsible for Phase II recovery of surgical patients including monitoring of physiological status, surgical wound care and discharge teaching.                         

Position Accountabilities   
1. Adheres to DMC practices for moderate sedation.  Identifies resources for guidelines to ensure safe care and monitoring of patients.                        
2. Identifies patients at risk for abuse as well as associated signs and symptoms.  States mandatory reporting requirements for healthcare professionals.                         
3. Ensures patient safety by assessing and proactively implementing safety measures with specific consideration of patient’s functional and developmental age.                        
4. Provides appropriate nursing interventions.  Competent in all routine nursing skills, including: (1) medication administration, (2) intravenous therapy, (3) management of indwelling catheters and drains, and (4) safe use of any medical equipment, such as glucose meters, IV pumps.                        
5. Keeps Manager/Director informed when difficulties and/or unusual situations occur.  Provides for allotted meal and break periods for staff.                        
6. Demonstrates the ability to provide care in emergency situations and follows established emergency procedures.                        
7. Determines the presence and type of Advance Directive, as appropriate.  Contacts appropriate resources to assist the patient and family as needed.                        
8. Delegates patient care tasks to ancillary personnel based on individual competency and scope of practice.  Evaluates effectiveness of care performed.                        
9. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to safely and appropriately fulfill job specific responsibilities related to safety, security, emergency preparedness, control of hazardous materials/waste, life safety, medical equipment and utility systems as outlined in the hospital’s environment of care plan.                        
10. Demonstrates the ability to organize workload, set priorities, and use time efficiently to complete work on time and in an organized manner.                        
11. Performs physical and psychosocial assessment of all age groups of patients that demonstrates knowledge and consideration of age specific and cultural differences.  Modifies nursing care to meet the age specific requirements of the newborn (0 to 30 days), pediatric (1 to 12 years), adolescent (13 to 17 years), adult (18 to 70 years), and geriatric (71+ years) patients                        
12. Additional responsibilities are outlined on the Clinical Ladder and are to be documented on the Annual Evaluation Checklist.
13. Demonstrates knowledge of peri-operative factors that alter the preoperative, intra-operative and immediate postoperative phases.                        
14. Provides interpreter services for patient, per hospital policy, as needed, in OR Holding area, as assigned.                        
15. Reviews Pre-Operative checklist for pertinent patient care information in OR Holding area, as assigned.                        
16. Assures patient consents are correct and signed in OR Holding area, as assigned. Notifies OR desk if there is a discrepancy in consent and scheduled procedure                         
17. Assures H&P is timely, facilitates additional documentation by surgeon as required in OR Holding area, as assigned.                        
18. Assures the requirement for informed consent is met in OR Holding area, as assigned.                        
19. Fulfills on-call requirements of department. Weekends as needed.                        
20. Performs all other duties as assigned.        

Minimum Education: BSN preferred                

Minimum Experience/Skills: Prefer two years Pre-op/Post-op experience                

License/Certificates/Credentials: Current: California RN license,  ACLS and PALS certification within 3 months.TCAR required within 12 months
