Organization's Summary Statement:

The Educational Technology Services (ETS), located in the Benjamin Building, supports the University of Maryland’s College of Education by providing reliable, efficient, and innovative technology services. ETS’s mission is to deliver comprehensive technology infrastructure—including hardware, software, and expert support—to ensure seamless integration of technology into teaching, research, and administrative operations across the College. Due to the graduation of the current Graduate Assistant, ETS is seeking a new Graduate Administrative Assistant - Desktop Support Assistant. This initial appointment will be for 12 months, requires a weekly commitment of 20 hours without major interruption, is fully on-site, and will begin as early as June 2025. This role is an invaluable opportunity for a graduate student interested in educational technology and IT support in a collaborative, service-oriented environment.

The responsibilities of this position include:

  • Serving as supplemental support to the primary desktop support technician

  • Diagnosing hardware and software issues for end users

  • Liaising with vendor partners to facilitate equipment repairs

  • Supporting the setup of computing devices and related equipment

  • Recording, updating, and documenting requests using an incident management system

  • Performing other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a graduate student currently enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent written/verbal communication skills and a customer-friendly attitude

  • Availability to work 20 hours per week between 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday

  • Problem-solving skills to analyze a situation and work through the problem to develop a viable solution

  • Ability to work in a team environment and with a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students professionally

  • Ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously while adjusting to changing priorities

  • Capable of learning new information at a rapid pace

  • Has an anticipated graduation date of May 2026 or later

Preferences:​ 

Graduate students in the College of Education are encouraged to apply. Previous experience working in an academic environment and/or a customer service field. A fundamental understanding of basic computer operation and troubleshooting is beneficial, but not required, including:

  • Familiarity with computer components and related peripherals

  • Knowledge of Apple and Windows platforms as well as various software packages, including Microsoft Office, G Suite by Google, and Adobe Creative Suite

  • Experience with service desk ticketing tools

Physical Demands:

The candidate should be able to lift items of up to 30 pounds and carry out any other related duties (e.g., computer set-up and disassembly, running cables, installing computer hardware components).  Area of support requires occasional travel to offices on the UMD campus, including the Benjamin Building, Cole Student Activities Building, Seneca Building, Anacostia Building, and Center for Young Children. Due to the nature of the work, this position is not eligible for telework.
