A Day in the Life

At Medtronic, we bring bold ideas forward with speed and decisiveness to put patients first in everything we do. In-person exchanges are invaluable to our work.

This role is onsite 5 days per week in North Haven, CT.

The Service Operations Engineer I (Robotics) supports the pre‑delivery inspection (PDI), configuration, testing, and readiness of robotic surgical systems prior to customer delivery. This is a highly hands‑on, onsite role focused on real equipment, real problems, and real‑time troubleshooting—not desk‑based design work.

This role is ideal for early‑career engineers who enjoy the physical aspect of preparing hardware for delivery, learning systems deeply, and contributing directly to product readiness.

What to Expect in This Role

  • Majority of time spent hands‑on in the lab or warehouse environment
  • Frequent movement of systems using carts, lifts, and elevators
  • Highly variable workdays — you may not do the same task two days in a row
  • Strong team culture with a shared “pitch‑in” mindset

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform pre‑delivery inspection (PDI) activities on robotic systems, including setup, configuration, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation.
  • Actively perform uncrating, movement, setup, and re‑crating of large medical devices in collaboration with warehouse and logistics teams.
  • Diagnose system issues, replace components, and coordinate ordering of replacement parts as needed.
  • Execute and close work orders, travelers, and inspection documentation using SAP and internal systems.
  • Modify existing procedures or develop new work instructions when defined processes do not yet exist.
  • Support post‑manufacturing updates such as hardware changes, part swaps, or software updates required for launch or customer‑specific needs.
  • Inspect system and equipment performance; investigate issues and initiate corrective actions to ensure product quality.
  • Provide engineering judgment when work instructions are incomplete or unavailable.
  • Collaborate closely with service engineers, warehouse teams, and cross‑functional partners to meet delivery timelines.
  • Maintain compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and support urgent requests in a service‑driven environment.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Manufacturing, Mechanical, Biomedical, Electrical, or related)

Physical Requirements

  • Regular standing, walking, bending, and working on equipment
  • Team‑based maneuvering of large systems using carts and lifts
  • Ability to work across lab and warehouse settings

Preferred qualifications

  • Internship, co‑op, or lab experience involving hands‑on technical work
  • Exposure to robotics, electromechanical systems, medical devices, or service engineering
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to document work clearly and follow quality procedures
  • SAP Experience
  • Experience working from or helping develop work instructions
  • Demonstrated flexibility and comfort operating in a fast‑changing environment

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.
