Job Description

The team, the department:

This position is part of the Competition & Compliance team, which is embedded in the Legal Department of METRO AG in Düsseldorf. The team is responsible for all competition law, antitrust and compliance matters of the METRO group. More specifically, cartel damage recovery, merger control advice and day to day competition law support are amongst the daily tasks of this team.

In this position:

  • You are the competition economist of the Competition & Compliance team: A unique role in which you are responsible for providing economic advice in competition law recovery cases, merger control notification, public policy and other day-to-day competition law advice work.
  • You are responsible for the collection, preparation and in-house analysis of data and other evidence for damage recovery cases. A smooth cooperation with several different METRO departments, for instance sourcing departments or IT is essential for this part of the role. You supervise the work of external economic advisors.
  • You support in the collection, preparation and in-house analysis of relevant data and other evidence for feasibility assessments and merger control notifications with both national and international competition authorities. You supervise the work of external economic advisors.
  • You support METRO's competition law department in advising the country entities on competition law matters (for instance, in calculating market shares).
  • You promote the interests of METRO through your economic assessments of regulatory and competition policy initiatives in the context of METRO's public policy activities (for instance, contributions to consultations with legislators, conducting market studies, etc.).

Qualifications

Who we are looking for:

 

  • A competition economist (m/f/d) or econometrician (m/f/d) with a minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in competition law, most importantly cartel damage recovery and merger control, ideally gained at a reputable consultancy firm.
  • With proficiency in STATA/R and/or Python, as dealing with data and econometrics is essential to this role.
  • And an independently developed economic view to support the team's competition law and merger control positions (for instance with regard to theories of harm and empirical market definition).
  • A competition economist (m/f/d) or econometrician (m/f/d) able to thoroughly scrutinize external economic analyses and act as partner to find robust and reliable solutions.
  • A solution-oriented and pragmatic data analyst (m/f/d) with a strong cross-functional mindset and a genuine interest in METRO’S wholesale business.
  • With proficiency in English and ideally also in German.
