Job Description

The Banking Connections team owns global banking integration for Square.  We provide platform-level building blocks to manage flexible and timely fund transfers for Square Sellers. 

As a software engineer on the Banking Connections team, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the services and infrastructure that move billions of dollars for Square. You will be deeply involved in the technical details of building highly available and reliable services, while also working with product teams to enable Square to rapidly build new capabilities for our merchants and buyers all over the world.

You will:

• Build our Banking Platform in the cloud, used by the rest of the organization and a key strategic asset of Square.

• Design and implement high-volume, low-latency, distributed transaction processing systems, making thoughtful tradeoffs between consistency and availability when both are not possible.

• Abstract away the legacy APIs of our financial partners into consistent, coherent service APIs for Square’s products to build upon.

• Build systems that manage customers’ sensitive data and hold Square to the highest standards for security and compliance.

• Design fault tolerant systems so the team can move fast without negatively impacting customers.

• Work cross-functionally with our product, business, and finance teams to develop Square’s global banking strategy.

Qualifications

You Have:

• 8+ years of software development experience

• Innate curiosity and a desire to be the domain expert for all aspects of reliably moving billions of dollars in a highly focused and highly functional team.

• A track record of creating highly available, scalable, low-latency, global systems.

• Strong commitment to high code quality, automated testing, and engineering best practices, and advocate the same to uplevel teammates.

• A strong sense of customer empathy and a drive to ship software that improves their lives

• The desire to work collaboratively, whether in person, over video, or asynchronously through online tools.

• A strong interest in cultivating a collaborative team environment.

Preferred experience but not required:

• Java

• Python

• Terraform

• AWS DynamoDB, SQS, Lambda, Step Functions

• MySQL, Guice, Guava, Protocol Buffers, jOOQ

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $202,500 - USD $247,500
Zone B: USD $192,400 - USD $235,200
Zone C: USD $182,300 - USD $222,800
Zone D: USD $172,200 - USD $210,400
