Job Description:

Purpose:

Under general supervision, this position leads and performs skilled maintenance carpentry work in City facilities or in fabricating/repairing City furniture.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Records data concerning work activities on appropriate form or log.

  • Operates various power saws (radial arm, skill, etc.), drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, etc. by hand.

  • Fabricates wooden furniture and accessories (cabinets, tables, shelves, credenzas, display cases, frames, molding, railings, etc.).

  • Reads profiles and blueprints. Installs/replaces floor & ceramic tiles.

  • Hangs sheetrock. Tapes, floats, and texturizes sheetrock.

  • Installs formica on wood products.

  • Performs skilled carpentry work in construction and repair of walls, ceilings, etc.

  • Rebuilds/repairs wooden furniture and cabinetry.

  • Trains personnel on the job in the performance of tasks.

Provides leadership, work assignments, evaluation, and guidance to others.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Knowledge of materials, equipment, and procedures used in skilled carpentry work sufficient to perform tasks and train other personnel in the performance of tasks.

  • Knowledge of applicable building codes.

  • Skill in reading and understanding blueprints.

  • Skill in estimating time, costs, and materials needed for carpentry projects.

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City employees and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years of experience as a journeyman carpenter.

  • One (1) additional year of experience as indicated above may substitute for one (1) year of the required education with a maximum substitution of four (4) years.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

Texas Class C Operator’s License or ability to obtain one within ninety (90) calendar days of hire.

Preferred Experience/Qualifications:

  • Work experience in commercial door and door hardware installation, troubleshooting, and repair.

  • Work experience in building maintenance and construction of residential and/or commercial buildings.

  • Work experience in wood and metal stud structural framing.

  • Work experience in drywall installation and tape, float, and texture of gypsum board.

  • Work experience in interior and exterior painting.

  • Work experience in forming concrete flat work such as sidewalks and concrete pads.


Preferred Skills:

Basic proficiency with Desktop/iPad Computers and Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Preferred Licenses/Certifications:

  • OSHA Construction Safety and Health 29 CFR 1910 Training Certificate OR the ability to receive it within 6 months of employment.

  • Forklift 29 CFR 1910.178 Operator Training Certificate OR the ability to receive it within 6 months of employment.

  • Aerial Lifts 29 CFR 1926.453 Operator Training Certificate OR the ability to receive it within 6 months of employment.

Other:

Ability to travel to more than one work location.
