Caregivers in the Patient Registration Area are the first point of contact for many of Akron General’s patients. As a Patient Access Representative, you are responsible for registering, scheduling and preregistering patients for inpatient, emergency and outpatient tests and procedures, educating patients regarding their benefit levels, and collecting and recording payments prior to, or at the time of, service. You will work face-to-face with diverse populations of patients to ensure a seamless model of access for patients, physicians and family members and leave a positive, lasting impression.  

This position is a great steppingstone to others in Customer Service or departments such as a coordinator or supervisor position within the Cleveland Clinic system.  

A caregiver in this role works days from 10:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

• Pre-register, greet, register, verify, run estimates, run medical necessity checks, and collect copays for ACC, Breast Health Center, Heart and Vascular (all OP areas in the main building) and Surgery Welcome Center.

• Schedule patients for inpatient, emergency and outpatient tests and procedures.

• Complete accurate face-to-face and phone interviews to obtain demographic, insurance, medical, and financial information.

• Provide accurate date and time information, room and physician availability, procedure duration, and any conflicting procedures to the physician’s office and/or patient.

• Educate patients regarding their benefit levels, review eligibility, advise on out-of-pocket expenses, collect and apply payments and maintain payment security.

• Complete questionnaires to assist departments with patient preparation.

• Utilize the screening tool for self-pay patients to determine possible payer sources

• Refer patients to financial counselors.

• Advise patients of and generate Advanced Beneficiary Notices (ABN) and/or Assumptions of Financial Responsibility (AFR).

• Obtain, scan, and index physician orders.

• Cross-train to staff all patient access areas.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• High School Diploma or GED

• One year of customer service work experience OR higher education and training 

• Proficiency in data entry  

• Knowledge of medical terminology  

• Excellent customer service skills 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• One year of clerical or billing work experience
