The Safeguards & Treaty Verification Section within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division seeks applications for a Senior R&D Staff Group Leader (GL) to lead a research group focusing on enhancing concepts, strategies, and nondestructive technologies that will strengthen the capabilities of USG and international regimes (e.g., the IAEA and partner countries) in efforts to safeguard and secure global nuclear material.

 

The Nondestructive Measurement Science and Technology Group focuses on research, development, and application of nondestructive assay systems, data acquisition technologies, and analysis methods that support international safeguards, domestic material control and accounting, operational safety for material processing, waste measurement, and nuclear material security protocols. The GL provides scientific leadership to the team thereby strategically advancing science and technology in the national security domain consistent with ORNL’s aspiration to be the world’s premier R&D institution.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Initiate, lead, and perform independent and impactful R&D on an ongoing basis as evidenced by innovative S&T delivered to sponsors, successful proposals, S&T presentations, professional community engagement, inventions/patents/copyrights, publications as appropriate, etc.
  • Develop a vision and implement a cohesive group research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects to position the group for future success.
  • Provide relevant input to assist the R&D Section Head with staff development while providing direct and impactful mentorship to staff on regular basis.
  • Establish collaborations, engage in Professional Societies, and organize technical events.
  • Exemplify a dedication to excellence in research, operations, and community engagement, and work cooperatively to leverage scientific capabilities across ORNL.
  • Lead ESH&Q by example and ensure all work is carried out safely, securely, and in compliance with ORNL policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Hold regular scientific/technical group meetings and be visible in the labs and workplace.
  • Assume front-line responsibility for safety in the NMST Group’s laboratory; mentor and empower the Laboratory Space Managers to build a strong safety culture.
  • Assist staff in setting performance goals consistent with the group’s strategy and members’ long-term career goals. Address performance issues in a timely manner.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in engineering, physics, or related field and six (6) years’ relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Successful record of writing proposals to government agencies in the area of national security.
  • Experience contributing to and leading national security projects and R&D teams as principal investigator.
  • Demonstrated record of excellence, as evident by publication list.
  • Experience presenting scientific results to sponsors and technical communities, as well as at professional society conferences and workshops.

  • Demonstrated record of supporting the professional development of research staff, growing a world-class research program, initiating new research directions and strong team building capability.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, outstanding written and oral communication skills, and good organizational skills.
