About the role

Job Title: Foundational Spanish Literacy Instructor / Instructora de Alfabetización Inicial en Español

The Spanish Literacy Instructor/ Instructora de Alfabetización Inicial en Español will be responsible for teaching and implementing a comprehensive Spanish literacy curriculum tailored to non-literate Hispanic Spanish-speaking middle school-aged students. The primary goal of this role is to equip students with the foundational skills necessary for reading, writing, and comprehension in Spanish and eventually, to introduce foundational literacy in English.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have teaching certification or credentials in Spanish education
  • 3+ years of teaching experience (experience may substitute education)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken Spanish
  • In-person instruction for students in San Rafael, CA

Highly preferred

  • Experience working with non-literate learners, particularly Hispanic/Latinx populations
  • Strong understanding of literacy development principles and instructional strategies

Responsibilities (Included but not limited to)

Curriculum Planning and Teaching

  • In collaboration with the Community Schools Program Lead, plan according to our current Foundational Spanish Literacy Curriculum which is tailored to the unique needs of non-literate Hispanic students.
  • Create and develop structured and culturally sensitive Spanish literacy engaging lesson plans, learning materials, and activities that promote active participation and comprehension.
  • Administer weekly assessments to gauge students' progress in reading, writing, and comprehension skills.

Cultural Sensitivity and Inclusivity

  • Foster a culturally inclusive and respectful learning environment that celebrates the diversity of Hispanic cultures and experiences.
  • Incorporate authentic cultural materials and experiences into the curriculum.
  • Actively promotes respect for cultural diversity

Youth Development

  • Support and maintain an emotional and safe environment
  • Be a positive role model for struggling students
  • Have fun engaging students in lesson plans that support school-day learning
