Job Description

HII Newport News Direct Support is seeking candidates to join our Los Angeles Class (688) E25 Test Engineering team. Candidates with prior US Navy Submarine Sonar Experience are encouraged to apply.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Provides technical support to engineers on a variety of technical tasks. Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes. Produces engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics). Performs detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas; preliminary analyses of data where guidelines are provided in such areas as trajectory adequacy, model dimensional consistency; and quantitative judgments concerning technical data. Uses personal computer in performance of analyses and development of documentation/reports. May conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis. The candidate will be performing testing, maintenance and operation of the Core SONAR System including arrays, hydrophones and transducer sensors.  In addition, candidate will ensure that all systems function properly as designed and in accordance with the required test procedures, generate Preliminary Problem Reports when discrepancies are found in equipment operation/functions of the SONAR system software, and assist in the problem resolution phases.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates Degree or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and 6 years related experience or High School Diploma or equivalent and 8 years related experience.
  • Must have prior operational or maintenance experience on submarines working in the areas of interior communications, electronic communications, navigation, or sonar equipment.
  • Requiring in-depth technical knowledge, a solid grasp of the requirements of and extensive Commercial-Off-The-Shelf electronics experience.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with internal and external customers including SUPSHIP, NAVSEA, CWITT & PMS450E, and coordinate with many different organizations to safely and successfully accomplish testing. 
  • Experience with Navy Work Authorization Forms (WAF’s) and tag-outs using the Electronic Shift Operating Management System (eSOMS) is required.
  • Must be able to work in a shipboard environment during a major availability.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, transport heavy equipment and climb ladders and stand for extended periods of time.
