Diagnostic Radiology Educator

The Educator (RT) is a self-directed, professional radiology technologist with advanced knowledge and expertise specific to his/her clinical area. The educator serves as a mentor, instructor, preceptor, and preceptor coordinator. The educator role is developed in relationship and responsibilities and specialty population of practice. The educator will be department based and may have additional responsibilities within the department as needed

Staffing/Patient Care Functions: 

• Team member will be expected to devote 10% of their hours to staffing within the clinical department, based on licensure. 
• On call requirements will be at the discretion of the Manager. 
• Demonstrates knowledge of department policies regarding radiation safety while using x-ray equipment. 
• Provides proper radiation protection for patients, self, and others (uses lead aprons, lead gloves and gonadal shielding when appropriate). 
• Properly screens all females in childbearing age as to possible pregnancy. 
• Properly wears radiation dosimetry badges, exchanges badges each month and reviews/ signs monthly dosimetry reports. 
• Operates and maintains all radiographic, digital, processing and viewing equipment associated with the production of high-quality images and quantitative analysis. 
• Verifies the operation of imaging equipment for all procedures and verifies the integrity of the equipment prior to the start of the procedure. 
• Maintains a thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of all diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and products used for procedures to ensure it’s accuracy and safety. Should be able to troubleshoot to a reasonable degree all equipment used within the department.

Onboarding Education- Staff/Student/Travel/Temporary Technologists: 

• Communicates with new team members before start date to make introductions, identify learning style, and provide an overview of the orientation process and attempt to alleviate fears and apprehensions. 
• Assesses new team member’s level of experience, formulates a competency based education plan and schedule with timed objectives.
• Schedules and facilitates orientation of new team members including acclimation to the physical environment, department standards, performance expectations, requirements, and competencies. 
• Evaluates progress of team member in meeting targeted objectives and revises plan as needed.
• Collaborates with preceptor(s), lead technologist and manager in planning, assessing and evaluating performance. 
• Provides input into the 30-60-90-day evaluation for all new team members where applicable. 
• Provides instruction to new team members on infection control, emergency equipment, and typical equipment or products used in the department. 
• Seeks feedback from team members to evaluate the orientation process and makes revision to orientation content based on this input.

On-Going Staff Education: 

• Ensures staff complete all required, mandatory education including but not limited toTCHPoint education and BLS certifications. 
• Maintains up to date and accurate educational files on all team members. 
• Ensures that all staff arescheduled for and attend educational opportunities as deemed appropriate per department. 
• Prepares and/or coordinates staff education for new products, medications, equipment, services provided, performance improvement initiatives and/or regulatory requirements. 
• Evaluates the learning needs of the department staff at least annually. And updates annual educational content accordingly..
• Refers to professional literature and evidence-based practice when preparing educational materials. 
• Collaborates with vendors, physicians, and other clinical professional staff to provide staff education. 
• Evaluates training for improved clinical outcomes as appropriate.

Leadership/Professional Development: 

• Demonstrates leadership skills such as the ability to motivate, educate, delegate, and mentor peers and other members of the healthcare team while effectively managing the care of patients.. 
• Acts as a resource and educator for multidisciplinary team members and students, continuously evaluating and documenting competency.
