Job Summary

The Director of the Division of Adult Emergency Medical Services (Director) is responsible for clinical operations of the department and supervision of the administrative staff, under direction of and reporting to the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. This involves operational guidance for the department to ensure optimal patient care. This position provides leadership and management for the department and works cooperatively and supportively with members of the Emergency Department and hospital medical staff for both John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital and Provident Hospital for Cook County Health (CCH).

Typical Duties

Divisional Duties:

General

  • Provides leadership, planning, organization, staffing, coordination, and evaluation for emergency department activities

  • Responsible for medical administration, personnel, and activities in the emergency department

  • Responsible for the ethical practice of emergency medicine within the department

  • Ensures collaborative effort in patient care with nursing

  • Acts as liaison with hospital administration and medical staff

  • Ensures adequate daily scheduling in Emergency Department (ED)

  • Collaborates with Department Chair on hospital and hospital department on issues involving patient experience, patient safety, and throughput


Administrative / Operations
  • Provides supervisory role to Emergency Medicine Administrative Director and Assistant Director and assists with operational issues. This is facilitated by daily interaction and scheduled weekly meeting to review the following:


o Ensures the supply requisitions are complete. Reviews requests for new supplies from the ED staff. Reviews deficiencies in stocking and supplies

o Updates capital purchases

o Reviews requests for capital improvements in the ED and follows-up on timelines for completion of hospital projects

o Receives updates from clinical engineering for repairs or servicing of any ED equipment

o Reviews IT issues including daily computer performance issues and database updates

o Reviews clerical staff performance including staffing and absences

o Ensures cleanliness of department with environmental service updates

o Facilitates clerical interaction with nursing

o Ensures updated contact list and on-call references for ED consultations

o Reviews patient complaints and requests from billing department

o Reviews throughout issue with bed control when needed
  • Provides support role to ED physicians in the Adult Emergency Services (AES) division. Provides mentorship to AES attending's to facilitate their interest in administrative projects. This is facilitated by daily interactions as well as scheduled monthly meeting to review operational issues including:


o Reviews the weekly and monthly throughput times of patients in the department and makes recommendations for improvement in the operational flow of the department to optimize the patient experience

o Reviews data from laboratory including throughput times of results as well as efficiency of the ED lab. Meets with laboratory leadership to acquire and review new testing and instruments

o Collaborates with Radiology for feedback to facilitate optimal transport times and reviews problematic cases and over reads

o Reviews pharmacy issues with dedicated PharmD in department. Revises current electronic prescriptions and updates current ED formulary

o Reviews current performance improvement projects in the department

o Reviews EMS issues with EMS coordinator

o Facilitates administrative research projects between committee members and Emergency Medicine residents

o Reviews current IT projects and suggestions for IT improvements
