Senior Radio Technician

We are looking for a Senior Radio Technician to join our Network Transport Services Team at Colorado Springs Utilities! You will be the specialized personnel involved in daily support of mission-critical two-way radio communications operations regarding radio equipment hardware, firmware, and software. You can also expect to issue radios and radio accessories to Colorado Springs Utilities personnel, assist radio system management functions and monitoring, and keep a detailed inventory of radio equipment and accessories.

How you’ll make an impact:

• Provide technical support for VHF/700/800 Analog and Digital radio equipment including Conventional or Trunking subscribers (mobiles and portables) and accessories
• Test, tune, and align radio repeaters, base stations, mobiles, and portables
• Build, update, and maintain radio subscriber templates
• Uses Motorola Radio Management application to program, firmware update, and feature flash APX radio subscribers
• Coordinate and schedule radio programming with various departments
• Utilizes Motorola Zone Watch application to detect radio system issues and reports them to the system manager
• Maintains accurate inventory of CSU radio equipment
• Monitors staffing changes and recovers equipment no longer needed
• Coordinate a yearly lifecycle replacement program of 250 radios per year through 2028
• Manages MCC7500 consoles in several dispatch centers and associated equipment
• Monthly rebooting of console computers to apply updates
• Coordinate with PPRCN and Motorola to perform system upgrades
• Administer and maintain a NICE recording system
• Work with the fleet to get radios installed and removed from CSU vehicles
• Provides end-user training on radio operation
• Creates procedure documents for other staff to follow
• Ensures quality of work performed in compliance with standard operating policies
• Ensures compliance with safety regulations and work procedures
• Ensures equipment, tools, and materials are used in a safe and efficient manner
• Must have flexibility in scheduling to meet the needs of the business

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Strong attention to detail
• Self-motivated and able to work independently or in small teams
• Working in hazardous environments including substations, power plants, water treatment plants, and wastewater treatment plants
• Working at heights, in confined spaces, handling ladders, pushing, pulling, and lifting equipment.
• Research and stay on top of emerging technologies and industry trends
• Principles of two-way radio communications
• Most likely have three years or more of experience in the field of two-way radio communications with extensive knowledge and hands-on experience with trunked radio subscribers

Who You Are:

• Associate’s degree (preferred) or technical training in the areas of electronics, computers, networking, RF, or equivalent work experience
• Must be able to pass the State of Colorado test and background check to acquire an advanced system key within 6 months of employment
• Motorola training certifications in Programming and Template Building, Radio Management, XTS/XTL Subscriber Academy, APX Subscriber Academy, or equivalent work experience
• Design principles of RF equipment
• Knowledge of two-way radio equipment, components, and systems
• Common causes of failure that occur in radio transmitting and receiving equipment
• Inventory tracking of equipment and parts
• Recordkeeping practices and procedures
• Familiarization with FCC requirements regarding wireless radio operations
• Windows-based operating systems, program installation, and Microsoft Office suite

Physical Requirements:

• Lifting and carrying up to 80 pounds and pushing and pulling 50-pound loads at a time
• Standing and walking up to eight hours per day and climbing multiple sets of stairs while carrying materials weighing between 40 and 60 pounds
• Riding in a vehicle for up to four hours to travel to and from job sites
• Working in different temperatures and changing weather conditions
• Traversing and inspecting all areas of the site in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, stooping, or stretching
• Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers
