uOttawa’s facilities encompass three main sites that are comprised of over 600,000 square meters of building space (over 6.4 million square feet), 42.5 hectares of grounds, 125 buildings and 4,500 beds in 11 residences. There are over 150 employees in Facilities, including Project Managers, Energy and Commissioning Specialists, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, Architects, and space Planners. The facilities capital and operating expenditures are in the range of $100M for the University’s $2.0 billion assets under management. The 20-year Capital spending plan envisions $4.0 billion of new investment highlighted by uOttawa launch of project Top Shelf, a $300 million capital investment to build a new facility for the Faculty of Health Sciences at uOttawa’s River Campus, as well as a tower at the Roger Guidon campus to house uOttawa’s new Advanced Medical Research Center (AMRC).

Position purpose:
Under the direction of the Manager, supports and guides teams within the division and the safe and efficient execution of various tasks, including repairs, minor renovations, and general maintenance of building systems and equipment at the University. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance of all systems in partnership with other maintenance teams and various contractors. Assists the manager in planning, coordinating and perform the work. Ensures that all University facilities are reliable, properly maintained and running smoothly.

The primary responsibility of this role will be to provide employee training and serve as a point of reference for the team in handling operational matters.

In this role, you will:

  • Supervises and supports contractors in day-to-day operations; sets priorities and offers advice to ensure that work is performed safely and goals are met.
  • Plans, organizes, assigns and monitors various preventive and corrective work in accordance with the work plan, relying on their experience and skills to set priorities for its performance.
  • Ensures good communications and effective coordination of work with clients, contractors and other maintenance teams.
  • Ensure that work is high quality and follows up in the work order management system as required.
  • Provides technical assistance, as required, to those responsible for planning and supervision, and to the section’s employees, in order to facilitate the planning, coordination and performance of the work.
  • Provides information and explains the techniques used in replacing, restoring and maintaining equipment, and ensures that technical information is available and correct.
  • Coordinates or generates service and purchasing requests for their section. Verifies submissions and invoices related to purchasing requests or data entered in the work order management software for follow-up, compliance, statistical and billing purposes.
  • Helps set up and update the equipment maintenance program; helps identify opportunities for improvement and participates in their implementation.
  • Identifies and corrects the causes of complex equipment breakdowns or system outages.
  • Promotes reliability, health and safety, and compliance with established procedures. Participates in technological decisions and evaluates their impact.
  • Assists in obtaining required approvals and missing resources.
