The Opportunity:

CACI is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Photonics team-- we are expanding!  Our laser communications technology is helping NASA provide high-definition video from the International Space Station, and to explore asteroids 250 million miles away.  Our other optical technology can also help scientists discover biohazards; support intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions; and protect soldiers from explosive devices.  Do you have a passion for innovation?  Apply now and join the team!

Responsibilities:

  • Support the design of photonic hardware.
  • Under limited direction design the packaging for complex subsystems with photonic, optoelectronic, electrical, and mechanical elements for R&D and production programs for U.S. government customers.
  • Design and develop high-precision electro-mechanical systems for various optical or photonic applications, including laser communication systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical, electrical, and software elements
  • Select appropriate motors, sensors, and other components for mechatronic systems
  • Develop and integrate control systems for precise motion control and stabilization
  • Design and analyze the packaging of complex subsystems using software tools.
  • Produce build-to drawings and data packages and collaborate with and manage 3rd party vendors to resolve specification, performance, and reliability issues and realize the commercial and custom-machined parts necessary to build the subsystem.
  • Lead the effort to transition the design into limited volume production, including development of assembly processes and writing of build procedures.
  • Collaborate with hardware designers to jointly optimize circuit card layout.
  • May lead a team of other designers and engineering professionals
  • May directly supervise lab technicians

Qualifications:

Required:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of 10 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience.
  • Proficient use of computer-aided design and analysis software, with SolidWorks strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of finite element modeling.
  • Experience in the design of complex subsystems with optical, photonic, optoelectronic, electrical, and mechanical elements.
  • Experience in electronic subassembly layout including board physical design, chassis or enclosure design, optical fiber routing, and electrical and optical connector selection.
  • Understanding of robotics principles and mechatronic systems, including kinematics, dynamics, and control theory.
  •  Demonstrated experience in designing and integrating sensors, actuators, and control systems in robotic or mechatronic applications.
  •  Proficiency in programming and implementing embedded systems for real-time control of mechanical and electromechanical systems.

Desired:

  • Experience in the design of high-power optical fiber amplifiers and transmitters.
  • Experience in the design of hardware to military and space design standards and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience in environmental testing to MIL-STD or equivalent industrial test levels, including shock, vibration, thermal, and EMI/EMC.
  • Experience in the use of LabView for data acquisition and control of systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of robotics and automation systems
  • Experience with programming languages commonly used in robotics (e.g., Python, C++, MATLAB)
  • Experience in designing and implementing control systems for robotic applications
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Active Security Clearance preferred
