About the role

Job Description:

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs this role will function as member of a collaborative teaching team, will develop and deliver a medical curriculum for clinical sciences. We are seeking areas of specialty included, but not limited to, internal medicine, family medicine, genetics, pediatrics, pathophysiology.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching (75%)

  • Utilization of diverse, novel and innovative teaching modalities in the delivery of patient and population based medical cases to MS I and MS II medical students
    • Case presentations
    • Small group discussions
    • Development of student assessments
  • Utilization of diverse, novel and innovative teaching modalities in the delivery health care delivery skills including interprofessional education, professional identity, systems-based practice, and self-directed learning and discovery
  • Assist in the development and delivery of didactic educational activities for MS III and MS IV students
  • Collaborate with the clinical skills education team to develop and facilitate osteopathic clinical skills courses including;
    • Effective communication to facilitate accurate history taking and sensitive delivery of information (ICS);
    • Conduct of appropriately thorough physical examinations in a respectful, efficient, and skillful manner (PC);
    • Approach diagnoses with the ability to extract critical information, a thorough knowledge of disease presentations, and rational use of laboratory tests (MK);
    • Consider the impact of culture, age, gender, sexual orientation, risk perception, and personal values on patients needs (PC);
    • Identify, define, and understand ethical issues in medicine, in order to provide health care in a morally responsible manner (MK, Prof);
    • Maintain skills for continuous education, and competence in obtaining and critically appraising new information from diverse sources (MK, PBLI);
    • Recognize the importance of their own well-being, and employ effective responses to challenges, stress, and fatigue (Prof, Prof Identity, SBP);
    • Be skilled in accurate, responsible, and respectful communication with other personnel involved in health care delivery (ICS, Prof, SBP);

Administration (5%)

  • Assist with interviewing and hiring of department faculty as requested
  • Participate in the peer evaluation of department faculty
  • Promote scholarly activity and research by KHSC faculty and students with outcomes of public dissemination of scholarship
  • Collaborate with Assistant Dean of Outcomes & Assessment (ADOA) on all evaluation of all courses, laboratory, service and scholarly activities, ensuring formal after action reporting, curriculum inventory and mapping at least annually (or as additionally requested)
  • Collaborate with COM leadership, ADOA on evaluation of osteopathic student readiness to advance to next level of curriculum in accord with KansasCOM policy

Service (10%)

  • Participate in student interviewing, mentorship, and career counseling
  • Foster a positive culture amongst the students, faculty, and KHSC-KansasCOM staff.
  • Serve on selected committees at the discretion of the Dean.
  • Assist the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in accreditation functions to include document creation, data collection, data entry, education of faculty on accreditation, and other accreditation-related functions at the discretion of the Dean.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned
     

Research and Scholarly Activity (10%)

  • Promote student Research
  • Participate in scholarly activity with outcomes of public dissemination of scholarship

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

N/A

QUALIFICATION(S):

A clinician educator with a track record of proven effective academic and administrative experience in Medical education.

  • A doctoral degree in one of the anatomical disciplines from a nationally accredited institution of higher education, or a DO or MD degree with appropriate experience.
  • Current, unrestricted medical license
  • Current Board Certification in specialty
  • Good standing with all regulatory and governmental boards and agencies
  • Experience preferred using innovative teaching methods which might include team-based learning, ‘flipped classroom’, problem-based learning, distance learning, interactive large group presentation, audience response systems, curriculum delivery systems (e.g. Canvas), and proficiency in exam item (COMLEX and/or USMLE) writing
  • A substantial record of success as an educator, and of managing personnel.
  • Experience in publication/national presentations.
