Job Title: Recreation Coordinator

Location: Jefferson City, Missouri

Department: Youth Residential

Employment Type: Full-time, 40 hours per week

Job Summary:
The incumbent of this position is responsible for supervising youth during recreational activities, planning, instructing, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating activities to promote self-esteem, sportsmanship, and positive behaviors. Responsible for collaborating with the Director to prepare daily therapeutic activity programs and maintaining participation in daily life skills schedules that support physical, emotional, social, and leisure development. Provides leadership and guidance in recreational sessions, fostering active, therapeutic, and enjoyable programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for scheduling and managing recreation sessions as determined by the Residential Director, creating weekly activity logs, and conducting recreational assessments.
  • Supervise youth during recreational activities to promote self-esteem, sportsmanship, and positive behaviors.
  • Create and follow an annual recreational plan for activities.
  • Complete Crisis Prevention Training annually.
  • Prepare and plan diverse activities aligned with Trauma-Informed Care and evidence-based practices.
  • Attend training to remain current on Trauma-Informed Care in residential settings.
  • Responsible for fostering a safe, emotionally nurturing, and healthy group climate.
  • Utilize verbal de-escalation techniques; perform physical restraints as a last resort if necessary.
  • Interact effectively with teenagers, often with trauma histories or adverse childhood experiences.
  • Maintain knowledge of behavior programs and apply them appropriately.
  • Maintain discipline and control, reporting conflicts promptly.
  • Support and facilitate positive interaction with others, exhibiting professionalism, respect, and confidentiality.
  • Support organizational policies and procedures, including compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain documentation and reports related to activities and youth progress.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Residential Director or supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience facilitating recreational, therapeutic, or youth programs.
  • Expertise in sports, coaching, therapeutic recreation, outdoor adventure, or related fields preferred.

Experience and Education Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree and 1 year of experience leading recreation or work training programs, required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of direct practice/work with youth in recreation, residential, juvenile justice, or related settings, required.
  • Expertise in sports, coaching, therapeutic recreation, outdoor adventure, or related areas preferred.

Supervisory Requirements:

  • Provide leadership and guidance to staff and youth.
  • Monitor and evaluate program activities and staff performance.
  • Encourage team participation and foster a positive work environment.
