Are you interested in a career in construction or engineering? S&ME is searching for motivated, full-time entry-level or experienced Construction Materials Engineering Technicians to join our Construction Services group. You'll be based locally for project work in the Roxboro area but report to our Raleigh, NC office.
What is the job:
As a Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you'll play a vital role in ensuring construction projects, from local eateries to major sports venues, are built with quality and safety at the forefront by testing specific building materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt and more. Whether you're new to the field or bring years of expertise, you'll receive hands-on training, mentorship, and opportunities to advance. Seasoned professionals can take on leadership roles, guiding projects and mentoring colleagues.
- Start with the Basics: Begin with learning how to test concrete, then expand into soils, asphalt, and masonry as you grow.
- Earn While You Learn: Receive paid, on-the-job training and support for certifications through ACI and ICC.
- Outdoor Work Environment: Enjoy working outside year-round in changing conditions, with new sites and crews keeping things fresh.
- Testing & Documentation: Perform field and lab tests, maintain equipment, and ensure accurate, complete reporting on your test results.
- Inspections & Standards: Conduct inspections per IBC codes, document findings, and manage data using Metafield®.
Experience shifting work hours based on project demands and weather, including early mornings, some Saturdays, and overtime (paid at time and a half). Occasional travel to support other offices is covered with per diem and lodging.

Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in a related field preferred for advanced levels
- Experience:
- Associate Technician/Technician I: 0-2 years relevant experience testing soil, concrete, or asphalt
- Technician II: 2+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with an Associate's degree
- Technician III: 3+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with an Associate's degree
- Technician IV: 5+ years of relevant experience; prior leadership or mentoring experience is a plus
- Key Competencies:
- Strong English communication skills (verbal and written)
- Basic math proficiency, including understanding of measurements and units of weight
- The understanding of a fluctuating schedule and interest in occasional travel
- Have a valid United States driver's license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) for driving in the US, with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to operate a company-assigned vehicle safely (Truck or SUV)
Compensation and technician level will be based on experience and industry certifications.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
This role involves hands-on work in outdoor environments, and with Company-provided Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), you'll need to be comfortable with:
- Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing (potentially up to 12 hours a day)
- Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
- Working outside of normal business hours and traveling (typically out-of-town and/or overnight) as project needs arise
