Summary

This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. DoD SkillBridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. HII Mission Technologies (HII-MT) Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with HII-MT.

Objective

The SkillBridge intern will train as an Submarine Engineering Technician within HII-Mission Technologies, reporting to a designated HII Supervisor, with the goal of learning the maintenance actions and duties required of our Submarine Engineering Technicians in support of the various Newport News Direct Support (NNS DS) customers such as test engineering and trades support within the E03 Submarine Engineering Department at the Newport News Shipyard. The intern will be assigned special projects as needed.

Desired End State (3 month target)

  • At the end of three months, the intern will be able to further develop skills needed to provide technical support to engineers on a variety of technical tasks. The intern will be able to gather, maintain, format, compile, and manipulate technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes. Produce engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics). Perform detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas; preliminary analyses of data where guidelines are provided in such areas as trajectory adequacy, model dimensional consistency; and quantitative judgments concerning technical data. Use personal computer in performance of analyses and development of documentation/reports. May conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis.

  • The intern will develop a good understanding of the E03 department in Newport News Shipyard (NNS) to include:

    • Solve engineering problems via Electronic Inspection Reports (EIRs)

    • Coordinate with Tradesmen to rectify submarine deficiencies

    • Utilize the Joint Fleet Maintenance Manual and Tag-out User’s Manual to ensure worker safety and the standard of quality is maintained

  • Mission Technologies will benefit from the military background of the SkillBridge intern’s marine engineering knowledge and experience specific to Naval Vessels and considers the SkillBridge internship an overall positive experience.
