Postdoctoral Position - Simulations of accretion outbursts in protoplanetary disks
University of MichiganAnn Arbor, United Statesfull_timeVerifiedPosted 19 Aug 2024
About the role
Description
The Department of Astronomy at the University of Michigan is offering a postdoctoral position supervised by Prof. Lee Hartmann to perform simulations of accretion outbursts in protoplanetary disks, and to examine the results in the context of evidence of high-temperature events in Solar System materials. The postdoctoral fellow will work on calculating non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic parameters and implementing them in an existing module of the Athena MHD code, and then simulating outbursts, working with Co-Investigator Zhaohuan Zhu of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. The postdoctoral fellow will work with PI Hartmann to evaluate the effectiveness of the outburst wind in lofting dust particles to larger distances. The postdoctoral fellow will then work with Dr. Conel Alexander of the Carnegie Institution for Science and Prof. Fred Ciesla of the University of Chicago to couple the dynamical evolution of the disk and the tracer particles to chemical models and to interpret the results in the context of the observed properties of chondritic and cometary materials. The position is for one year with an extension of up to three years. The salary will be in the range $63-65K. Included benefits: https://hr.umich.edu/benefits-wellness
