About the role

Sayari Labs is looking for a Research Intern to join our team (20-40 hours per week) for a 12-week week paid internship. The focus of the position will be split between data extraction, research & data analysis, and additional tasks as needed.Our ideal candidate has reading comprehension fluency in Chinese and enjoys spending time reading through academic reports and extracting key insights from them.

This is a remote position with the option of going into our office, if located in Washington D.C.

What you’ll be doing:

In this role, you will be responsible for researching academic & NGO articles and databases to support Sayari’s data acquisition operations and risk insights development. Reporting to the Director of Product Management–and working closely with our analysis team–you will be responsible for curating and performing quality assurance on forced labor reports and regulations (specifically as it relates to violations to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act).

Sayari’s continued success depends upon the company’s ability to identify, acquire, and maintain data about people and companies from around the world, with geographical coverage sufficient to meet customer demands and redundancy plans. So it bears repeating, to succeed in this job, you should enjoy spending time reading through academic reports and extracting key insights from them.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Data Extraction (30%):
    • Extract structured data from reports and regulations in PDF, word, HTML form and enter data into a structured spreadsheets
  • Research & Data Curation (50%):
    • Conduct public records research in corporate registries, corporate data aggregators, and other reliable sources such as annual reports and regulatory filings to identify company names, aliases, identifiers and addresses that correspond to the correct company
    • Accurately map company identifiers to Sayari’s identifier repository
  • Ad-Hoc Tasks (20%): Other ad-hoc tasks as needed

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Creativity and attention to detail
  • Experience with public records, due diligence/commercial intelligence tools
  • Experience background research on international affairs issues
  • Professional fluency in Chinese (Mandarin)
  • Familiarity with spreadsheet tools such as Excel and Google Sheets
  • 1 year of experience in investigations or open-source research for commercial, academic, or similar purposes (internship experience included)
  • Ability to multitask, solve problems creatively, and triage competing priorities
  • Ability to identify challenges before they arise and work proactively and creatively to address them

Helpful Skills & Experience

  • Quantitative business analyst, coding (Python), data science, or related experience
  • Additional professional fluency in Vietnamese and/or Malay
