Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is an advanced-level position in the School Health Program and the Community Health Improvement Section (CHI) of the Okaloosa County Health Department (OCHD). Position involves work focusing on public health issues facing school-age children. These issues include, but are not limited to, healthiest weigh initiative, primary prevention education of tobacco usage, preventive dental health education as well as infectious disease education and injury prevention. This is professional work, planning implementing, evaluating, and delivering health promotion and health education programs and performing outreach activities to the community and target groups within the community. This position serves as a health education resource for public and private schools, voluntary pre-kindergarten programs, licensed childcare facilities, as well as community organizations focusing on school age children in Okaloosa County.

 

Collaborates with health specialists, school administrators, child development facility administrators, community-based youth groups, and civic organizations to ascertain community health needs, determine availability of services, and to develop goals using a written work plan.

 

Identifies and develops health education presentations that are age-appropriate for use by school staff or child development program staff to enhance the health knowledge and improved health habits of children. Participates in developing or selection of curriculum as well as preparation of pamphlets, visual aids, course outlines and other materials used in teaching and promoting health education to targeted school age children and upon request, will instruct and assist in developing presentations to be utilized in schools, child development facilities, and community-based youth groups.

 

Conducts activities to increase awareness of impact of lifestyle on healthy weight and chronic disease as well as address the safety issues facing youth in Okaloosa County. Develops and maintains cooperation between public, civic, professional, and voluntary agencies. Prepares and disseminates educational and informational materials. Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. Communicates with others outside the organization. Tailors communication and presentations to the needs of the audience. Represents the organization to the public and community.

 

Analyzes data to identify individual and /or community needs prior to planning, implementing, and evaluating programs or services designed to promote healthy lifestyles. Has knowledge of procedures and technical skills necessary to obtain demographic and community health data on Okaloosa County youth. Uses data to recognize the needs of health education and the targeted age group. Develops appropriate approaches for implementing health education in a culturally competent and appropriate manner. Attends training and maintains competencies. Investigates best practices to inform, educate, and empower children, parents, teachers and the community about public health issues facing our youth.

 

Performs all other duties as assigned in support of the Agency’s mission and vision.
