Primary Purpose of Position

The Breast Care RN provides clinically competent delivery of quality medical services within their scope of practice. The BCRO RN is responsible for safe patient care and ensuring adherence to all site-specific Policies and Procedures.


Core Duties:

• Provide intravenous management, assist with biopsies, coordinate care with the oncology team, and radiation therapy.

• Provide pain management, patient and family teaching, and monitor patient outcomes.

• Maintain accurate and current notes in the electronic medical records of all patients cared for, as required.

• Assume additional administrative or clinical duties as requested or needed to ensure sustainment of normal unit operations and ensure compliance with JC standards, including conducting mandatory clinical training, monitoring clinic supplies and equipment, ensuring enforcement of SOPs and standards, conducting monthly record chart audits, and attending staff meetings.

• May be required to perform charge nurse duties.

• Demonstrate a clear understanding of adhering to hospital policies and procedures, particularly those dealing with patient health information (PHI) and patient confidentiality.

• Assess for symptomatic changes and educate patients and families on the expectations and side effects of treatments and procedures.

• Maintain accurate records of patient education or direct hands-on care, referrals, and follow-up calls. 

• Maintains and assists with Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) database and MQSA compliance.


Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Use the nursing process as a basis for professional practice. Demonstrate proper assessment and preparation of patients for treatments and procedures, including surgical interventions.

• Perform/assist with clinic-specific procedures, in accordance with established policies and guidelines used in the MTF and IAW JC guidelines. Supervise all paraprofessionals necessary in the care and treatment of the patient.

• Orient and educate staff on inpatient and outpatient units in relation to the Breast Cancer program and competency-based skills necessary to care for breast cancer patients.

• Assist physicians with set-up for biopsies, exams, wound care, and other procedures performed in the clinic.

• Coordinate and schedule patients for Operating Room (OR) and biopsy procedures.

• Fully participates in the nursing performance improvement program in accordance with the Joint Commission, American College of Radiology Oncology (ACRO), Mammogram Quality Standards Act & Program (MQSA), and infection control guidelines.

• Demonstrated ability to recognize adverse signs and symptoms and react quickly and appropriately in emergency situations. Ability to obtain, assess, and report critical lab or diagnostic results to the patient’s physician in a timely manner.

• Other Duties: Assist with other duties of the site, including administrative work, cleaning, inventory management, and any other duties as assigned during downtime.
