This position requires you to maintain internet service and a mobile phone with voice and data plans to be used when required for work.

Purpose

This position leads crews and coordinates onsite workers for the construction, installation, and maintenance of telecommunications infrastructure. Responsibilities include assisting with daily planning, assigning tasks, ensuring safety compliance, interpreting blueprints and work orders, collaborating with other departments and contractors, troubleshooting, performing craft-specific work, training team members, operating equipment, maintaining quality control, and completing supervisor-assigned duties.

Responsibilities

  • Lead full-time employees and contractors on the job site.
  • Relay instructions, scheduling and assigning work in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Inspect completed work.
  • Perform work typical of the craft and/or job classification of those workers in the group (placing fiber and copper cable through manhole and tunnel systems, splicing, troubleshooting and testing copper and fiber etc.)
  • Inspect work area for protection/including Safety hazard warnings.
  • Assist supervisor with creating estimates.
  • Enter time on work orders.
  • Operating a UT vehicle. Driving university owned vehicles to job sites will be required for this position. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy UTS157.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least three years’ experience in leading Outside Plant crews.
  • At least five years’ experience in maintenance and repair of telecommunications crafts trade (placing outside plant cable to include fiber optic and copper cable, fiber and copper cable splicing/terminating, working with cable air pressure).
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and in construction areas of new buildings or renovated areas of existing building.
