We’re seeking a Director of Renewable Energy to join our team at our Whippany, NJ headquarters and help drive Suburban Propane’s growth in lower carbon intensity (CI) propane, renewable natural gas (RNG), clean hydrogen, and other emerging low-carbon energy solutions. This role blends strategy, commercial development, and operational excellence. The Director will support the Vice President, Strategic Initiatives – Renewable Energy in driving Suburban’s clean energy evolution while ensuring that renewable energy operations are safe, reliable, and scalable.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Support the development and refinement of Suburban’s renewable energy strategy, including lower CI propane, RNG, clean hydrogen, and other low carbon energy sources.
- Identify opportunities for growth through technology evaluation, partnerships, strategic and organic growth.
- Monitor regulatory and policy developments affecting renewable energy markets.
- Support renewable energy field operations to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient execution of all projects and ongoing operations.
- Support site selection, permitting review and applications, equipment procurement, and technology assessment.
Project Development & Execution
- Lead project assessment, financial modeling, engineering coordination, and project planning for new renewable energy initiatives.
- Manage the full project lifecycle from concept development through commissioning, ensuring milestones are met and budgets are maintained.
- Work cross functionally with safety, operations, legal, and finance.
Commercial & Market Development
- Support identification, assessment, and negotiation of commercial agreements with critical stakeholders including, customers, equipment providers, technology providers, and other project partners.
- Track competitive dynamics, market trends, and government incentive programs including state low carbon fuel standard (LCFS) and federal renewable fuel standard (RFS) programs.
Governance & Reporting
- Prepare executive level briefings, project updates, financial analyses, and board level summaries.

Salary Range: $137,000 - $185,000 per year (dependent on experience)
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, environmental science, or related field. Master’s Degree preferred.
- 8 of years of experience in renewable energy and/or clean fuels or related energy sectors.Demonstrated ability to lead complex, multi-stakeholder projects from concept through operations.Strong operational background with experience supporting and/or managing field operations or technical deployments.Excellent financial, analytical, and executive communication skills.Experience working with EPCs, technology vendors, equipment providers, and project development partners (preferred).
- Familiarity with LCFS, RINs, CI modeling, and federal and state incentive programs.
- Direct experience with hydrogen, renewable propane, biogas from anaerobic digestion, RNG, or other low-carbon fuels (preferred).
- Experience with LCFS, RFS, CI modeling, and related renewable fuel compliance programs (preferred).
