Sustainable Packaging Engineer

Job Scope:
Dentsply Sirona is a leading healthcare medical device company committed to innovation, sustainability, and improving dental care. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we are seeking a highly skilled Packaging Design and Development Engineer to drive and design the implementation of innovative sustainable packaging solutions for our dental equipment and consumable products. This individual will be responsible for developing protocols for package design, packaging process validation, and package shelf-life testing. They will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and outside suppliers to drive new packaging technologies and strategies, with a focus on improving time to market, cost, environmental impact and advancing brand image.
Job Responsibilities:
- Apply packaging material knowledge to design innovative primary, secondary and tertiary packaging concepts for new and existing products replacing non-recyclable materials, optimizing material thickness, utilizing approved board grades--following the company’s sustainable packaging design guidelines
- Develop protocols for package design, packaging process validation, and package shelf-life testing for external laboratory testing and in alignment with necessary and compliance change control impact assessment criteria
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and outside suppliers to drive new packaging technologies and strategies to advance and accelerate especially our CTS, IPS and OAS GBUs to improve recyclability of plastics and find alternate bio-plastics solutions.
- Work closely with packaging equipment and manufacturing engineering staff to ensure newly selected recyclable materials are ready for validation and ensure a high-success rate for product compatibility, sterility, and customer/brand acceptance.
- Collaborate with sourcing team to evaluate new material and supplier choices, recommend new material specifications for sourcing strategy exploration and deeper testing including business case development input for longer term category strategy updates.
- Provide guidance for changes to R&D engineer, Industrial Engineering, Marketing and New Product Development teams for alternate compliant material choices.
- Work with testing labs to ensure appropriate product safety and compliance is met in accordance with medical device packaging regulatory requirements.
- Provide expert guidance and rationale for conducting appropriate compatibility testing, following a risk-based approach, utilize statistical techniques and expertise for packaging analysis and validation.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including R&D, Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs, and Manufacturing, to ensure that packaging systems meet regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- Leads integrated innovation workshops with suppliers and internal teams to create future state sustainable packaging concepts.
