As a Staff Engineer within BD’s Urology & Critical Care (UCC) team, you will play a pivotal role in identifying unmet customer and user needs across urological and critical care spaces. Using the Stanford Biodesign methodology, you will collaborate with clinicians, engineers, and business leaders to translate insights into high-impact innovation opportunities. Your work will directly influence the development of next-generation solutions that improve patient outcomes in areas such as incontinence management and infection prevention across care settings.Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
Identify focus areas for critical innovation projects
Conduct clinical observations and stakeholder interviews to understand the problem space. Identify, draft and refine needs statements accordingly.
Scope, quantify and prioritize needs to identify high-value opportunities across diverse patient populations (leveraging structured rubrics to evaluate needs, quantitative surveys, and /or health economic value calculation).
Collaborate with cross-functional and cross-regional teams to incorporate global perspectives and develop strong knowledge of our global customer base.
Contribute to development and evolution of strategic innovation roadmaps.
Support insight generation:
Analyze research data and facilitate cross-functional interpretations to support insight generation.
Set up the context from triangulated insights for early-stage concept development and filtering based on feasibility, differentiation, and market fit
Contributing to establishing an insight hub (clinical, commercial, user, etc.) for continuous design considerations.
Conduct field visits and attend conferences to establish a deep understanding of customers, and bring insights back to the UCC business.
Change management and communication
Provide regular updates to key stakeholders to bring awareness and build engagement in innovation practices and progress.
Host innovation training events to empower UCC’s innovation engine.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering
- Minimum of 3 years of extensive training in innovation methods (Biodesign, Design Thinking, Jobs to be Done, Design for Six Sigma)
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in healthcare innovation, preferably in urology, critical care, or infection prevention
- 3 years of prior experience in formal innovation and new product development processes
- Ability to travel 20% domestically and internationally
Preffered Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Science or Engineering
- Commercial or clinical experience
- Specific experience in urology, critical care, or infection prevention fields
- Demonstrated ability to develop deep, rigorous analytical analysis for growth opportunity identification
- Proven track record of independently identifying, prioritizing, and advocating for growth opportunities
- Excellent communication skills across technical and clinical stakeholders
- Strategic thinking with ability to anticipate future trends and develop long-term plans
- Patient-centric mindset in decision-making
- Initiative-taking with a test-and-learn approach
- Curiosity, empathy, and collaborative mindset
