Primary Purpose of Position

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Registered Nurse (RN) delivers clinically competent, developmentally appropriate, and family-centered nursing care to pediatric patients with acute, complex, and critical conditions. The RN is responsible for providing safe, evidence-based care within the full scope of nursing practice, in accordance with Military Treatment Facility (MTF), and site-specific policies and procedures.

This role is patient-facing and working in a clinical setting. It is customer-facing with high expectations for operational excellence.

This role requires advanced clinical judgment, technical proficiency, and compassionate communication to support children and their families through all phases of hospitalization. The RN collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of care, supports health promotion and disease prevention initiatives, and serves as a clinical resource for patients, families, and staff.

All RNs must meet the qualifications for their specialty and perform duties consistent with Department of Defense (DoD) or government service professionals of similar experience and assignment. This includes maintaining clinical readiness, participating in quality improvement initiatives, and adhering to the highest standards of pediatric and critical care nursing practice.

Clinical Practice

•Deliver a full range of RN services including triage, assessment, monitoring, medication administration, and execution of physician orders.

•Provide intensive nursing care to critically ill pediatric patients, including those recovering from anesthesia or sedation.

•Administer high-risk medications and therapies (e.g., vasoactive infusions, TPN, blood products) and monitor for adverse reactions.

•Operate and interpret data from advanced equipment such as ventilators, cardiac monitors, and hemodynamic systems.

•Respond to emergencies, initiate appropriate interventions, and document events accurately.

•Maintain a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment, adhering to infection control and aseptic techniques.

Care Coordination and Advocacy

•Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement individualized care plans.

•Coordinate referrals and discharge planning with internal departments and community resources.

•Advocate for the physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs of patients and families, including those impacted by abuse or neglect.

•Participate in the Family Advocacy Program as directed, including documentation and reporting.

Patient and Family Education

•Provide individualized education and counseling to patients and families on disease processes, medications, procedures, and self-care.

•Address cultural, emotional, and developmental needs in all teaching and support efforts.

•Ensure access to appropriate educational materials and resources.

Leadership, Supervision, and Collaboration

•Provide clinical oversight and mentorship to LPNs, corpsmen, and ancillary staff.

•Participation in orientation, cross-training, and competency assessments of new personnel.

•Offer input into performance evaluations and clinical appraisals.

•Collaborate in the review and communication of clinic policies and procedures.

•Remain flexible in staffing patterns and participate in temporary assignments as needed.

Documentation and Communication

•Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation of patient encounters, treatment plans, and communications.

•Document all care, assessments, interventions, and outcomes using approved abbreviations and formats.

•Communicate effectively with healthcare team members, patients, and families.

•Perform phone triage and assist in accessing appropriate levels of care.
