Job Description
NBC News Digital is seeking an experienced editor to oversee its coverage on the weekends for NBCNews.com. In this role, you will be driving editorial on the biggest news stories and leveraging the full reporting power of NBC News to create a robust report.
Digital’s news team covers a wide spectrum of topics including extreme weather, entertainment, sports, business, health, crime, human interest, pop culture, and more. The senior news editor for the weekends will be comfortable assigning and editing stories on all topics and know how to move a story forward.
This role will work closely with other editors and senior leaders in Digital and across the network, and the right candidate will thrive in a collaborative environment. The senior editor for weekends will work both weekend days and use their scheduled weekdays for coordinating and planning weekend coverage and contributing to other news editing.
This role is based in New York City.
Responsibilities
- Overall direct the breaking news coverage of NBC News Digital and manage the day-to-day journalism and operations of the team.
- Manage editors on the breaking news team and regularly communicate with the reporters
- Set the agenda for the breaking news team to ensure we are on the biggest and most important stories of the moment with urgent, distinct or exclusive coverage
- Collaborate with other digital editors and staffers across the broadcast unit on breaking news coordination
- Oversee reporters in the field on major breaking coverage to produce high-impact and exclusive dispatches
- Make sure we have the best photos, videos and other visual elements to help tell our stories
- Edit the biggest breaking news stories of the day to ensure they are thorough, well written and authoritative.
Qualifications
- 7+ years in journalism with several years as an editor or team leader
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent years of relevant working experience
- Skilled editor with outstanding communication skills
- Expertise in writing SEO and optimizing stories for different platforms
Desired Characteristics
- Experience leading a team of journalists for a national digital news outlet
- They will be an expert planner, have sharp news judgment and anticipate which stories from earlier in the week require further inspection and reporting that will resonate with a weekend news read
- They will also be an excellent communicator who can work well with others in a variety of roles at different levels of the company
- This person will also have the ability to attack major breaking news, and will know when readers will be best served with a live blog.

- Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.
