Project/Unit Description
The Digital Engineering Branch (DEB) within the Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) conducts applied research in model-based systems engineering for defense applications. This position will support multiple DoD programs focused on Future Vertical Lift (FVL) and Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), applying digital engineering methodologies to develop MOSA-compliant avionics solutions. The role involves developing system models using industry-standard tools, creating data architectures, and supporting mission engineering efforts for airworthy systems. Work includes collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams and presentation of technical findings to government sponsors. This position will be on-site at the GTRI Huntsville Research Facility.
Job Purpose
The Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) develops and executes novel system model-based approaches to define, design, analyze, and document system development. The MBSE Researcher applies MBSE tool suites to enable the use of model-based best practices in DoD acquisition and system life cycle support. This position supports stakeholders and sponsors in the application of MBSE to trade space analysis, design, acquisition, and sustainment. The MBSE executes System Engineering and MBSE processes including system definition, functional decomposition, requirements development, architectural development and analysis, design synthesis, system analysis, data modeling and architecture development, test program development, and sustainment activities. The MBSE researcher also presents technical and program management presentations to government sponsors.

- Create product or system definitions and conduct initial requirements analysis.
- Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes.
- Author UAF models capturing stakeholder needs and resulting enterprise architectures.
- Author SysML models capturing system requirements and design.
- Author data models capturing system data requirements and design.
- Analyze product or system functionality as defined by requirements.
- Interface with and learn how to work with disparate engineering teams for technical tasking.
Additional Responsibilities
- Document modeling processes and best practices for MBSE implementation.
- Support FACE data model development for MOSA conformance testing efforts.
- Develop mission engineering models for defense aviation programs.
- Contribute to technical presentations and reports for government sponsors.
