POSITION SUMMARY
The Medical Assistant I On-Call (MAI-OC) is a key member of the medical care team who proactively collaborates with providers to provide high quality primary care to a panel of patients. The MAI-OC assists in managing patient flow and performs care coordination for patients in their pod, under the guidance of a registered nurse.
The Native American Health Center is an accredited institution and adheres to the standards of excellence set forth by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA).
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Pod Primary MA Responsibilities
- ‘Red Carpet’ patients by greeting them in a courteous, respectful and timely manner.
- Lead care team huddle, using information gathered during chart preparation.
- Work in conjunction with others in pod to ensure patients are roomed and discharged in an efficient manner.
- Appropriately prepare exam room for patient visits.
- Admit patients and conduct an initial interview; record results into the patients’ electronic health record (EHR) in a timely manner.
- Initiate patient care by following approved standing orders based on the patient history and presenting symptoms.
- Check pulse, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height of patients. Record results into the patients’ electronic health record.
- Assist providers with procedures as directed.
- Assist in providing health education, as appropriate and as directed.
- Perform blood tests, EKG's, visual acuity, urine and hearing tests; record results into the patients’ medical chart (paper or electronic) in a thorough and accurate manner.
- Administer injections to pediatric and adult patients; record results into the patients’ medical chart (paper or electronic).
- Update patient demographics as reported by patient in the NextGen practice management system.
- Data enter into the immunization registry daily, and in a timely manner.
Pod Care and Case Coordination Responsibilities
- In preparation for scheduled patients, anticipate and procure relevant documents and data for the provider (i.e., consultation reports from specialists.)
- Review providers’ schedule throughout the day and work proactively to keep care team on track.
- Assist provider with followup, as directed (i.e., outreach to patients, call labs for results, etc.)
- Assist in closing the loop on subspecialty referrals, in collaboration with the Referral Coordinator.
- Call No Show appointments to follow up and reschedule, if appropriate.
- Conduct robust confirmation calls for patients, by calling the same day of their appointment.
- Support RN in managing forms, for pod providers’ signature/attention.
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Check patients out, and schedule follow up appointments, as appropriate.
- Close lab according to departmental protocol, when assigned.
- Prepare an inventory of supplies to determine items that need to be replenished.
