Job Description

About This Role

Biogen is seeking a research scientist with LC-MS and protein characterization background to join the analytical biochemistry team. This role at Biogen is an 18-month position designed to provide a unique opportunity for scientists to gain exposure to drug discovery and development and train in an industrial research environment. The research fellow is expected to be a major contributor in applying hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX MS) to protein structural biology studies. Candidates will have the opportunity to work with multiple therapeutic modalities, including biological therapeutics, AAV, and small molecules. The candidate must be able to adapt and learn new techniques and methodologies quickly as well as implement new processes and procedures in the lab. The candidate must have strong laboratory skills, especially in HPLC/UPLC and mass spectrometry experience in protein characterization. Self-motivated, detail-driven, and flexible experts are needed for the position.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop and implement HDX MS methods in the investigation of protein-protein interactions, protein conformational changes in antigen-antibody complexes and AAV capsids.
  • Drive insights into mechanisms of action and structure-function relationships and, when necessary, utilize that knowledge for engineering purposes.
  • Take the initiative to develop and execute stage-appropriate LC-MS methods in developability assays, including intact protein analysis, peptide mapping, DLS and DSC, etc.
  • Work closely with our biological drug discovery team to support research projects in the neuroscience space.

Who You Are

You are passionate about protein science and are willing to learn new technologies and solve challenging problems.  You are a scientist with strong technical expertise and communication skills.

Why Biogen?

Our mission to find therapies for neurological and rare diseases is a unique focus within our industry and this shared purpose is what connects us as a team. We work together to overcome obstacles and to follow the science. We are resilient as we strive to make an impact on our patients’ lives and on changing the course of medicine. Together, we pioneer. Together, we thrive.

Qualifications

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. degree with 0-2 years experience in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry or related discipline and ability to commit to an 18-month-long industry research fellowship based in Cambridge, MA.
  • Hands-on experience with development of LC-MS methods with various reverse phase front-end separations.
  • Expertise in detecting and addressing matrix effects in LC-MS analysis
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Be responsible, organized, and possess strong attention to detail
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in HDX-MS using QTof system is a plus.
