DTU Tenure Track Researcher in Microalgae-Bacteria Consortia - DTU Chemical Engineering
DTU - Technical University of DenmarkAbout the role
The Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (DTU Chemical Engineering) invites applications for a position as Tenure Track Researcher in Microalgae-Bacteria consortia.
We are seeking a highly motivated scientist with expertise in gas fermentation, microbial bioprocesses, and microalgae-bacteria consortia, with a strong focus on interspecies metabolic interactions, pathway regulation, and bioprocess optimization. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of sustainable bioconversion platforms for the transformation of biogas-derived carbon into amino acid-enriched biomass, through the rational design and optimization of microalgae-bacteria consortia, metabolic pathway regulation, nutrient partitioning, and bioreactor performance.
You will become part of an international, collaborative and multidisciplinary environment, working with both academic and industrial partners in Denmark and abroad.
Responsibilities
Your primary tasks will be to:
- Conduct and supervise research in microbial bioprocess engineering, including liquid and gas fermentation systems, microbial consortia design, and interspecies metabolic interactions.
- Design, develop, and optimize novel bioprocesses and microalgae-bacteria consortia for sustainable conversion of biogas to amino acid enriched biomass focusing on metabolic pathway regulation, interspecies carbon and nitrogen fluxes, nutrient partitioning, and bioreactor performance.
- Developing and applying modeling tools to evaluate enzyme activity, and process performance across scales.
- Advance bioprocess optimization of complex microbial systems, including multi-species interaction in gas–liquid bioreactor platforms.
- Deliver scientific excellence through high-impact publications, dissemination and outreach.
- Teach and develop courses at BSc and MSc levels in bioprocess engineering.
- Supervise student projects (BSc, MSc, PhD).
- Attract competitive external funding nationally and internationally.
- Build and strengthen collaborations with academia, industry, and international consortia.
Qualifications
Your qualifications include:
- PhD degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or related disciplines.
- Strong research profile in microalgae-bacteria consortia, CO2 capture, and related fields.
- Experience with bioprocess optimization, gas-liquid fermentation,
- Knowledge about the multispecies interaction withing consortium and genome scale metabolic modelling.
- Documented experience with analytical methods and wet-lab experimentation.
- University-level teaching and supervision experience.
- Track record of scientific publications in high-quality journals.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work independently and in teams.
- Fluency in English.
You must contribute to the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.
You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:
- Research experience
- Experience and quality of teaching
- Research vision and potential
- International impact and experience
- Societal impact
- Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
- Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
- Communication skills
Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
Starting date is according to mutual agreement. The position is a full-time position.
