Senior Data Storage Engineer

As a Senior Data Storage Engineer at Zoox, you will be pivotal in designing, implementing, maintaining, and scaling our petabyte-scale, high-performance, software-defined storage systems. Additionally, you will architect and build data solutions to support our robotics and AI research, balancing optimal performance and cost for demanding globally distributed workloads. This role involves deep technical work within the Linux kernel and application code to resolve storage and network related issues and collaborating with software engineering teams to ensure the development of scalable and supportable platforms.

In this role, you will:

• Design, implement, and support internal and cloud-based scale-out storage and data systems.
• Architect, build and oversee the data and storage infrastructure to ensure robustness and scalability.
• Troubleshoot storage issues deep within the Linux kernel, application code, and network layers to eliminate bottlenecks, deadlocks, and bugs.
• Collaborate with developers and software engineers to enhance scalable storage platforms and integrate efficient solutions.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience with scaled software defined storage systems such as Ceph, Quobyte, Lustre, GFS, or GLUSTER.
• Proven contributions to the Linux kernel or open-source storage-related projects.
• Proficient in Linux Kernel, network, and storage tuning.
• Strong team leadership, project management and organizational skills.
• Passionate about the nuances of Scale-Out vs. Scale-Up strategies.
• Expertise in object storage technologies like S3 and its compatibles.
• Proficiency in network filesystems (NFS, Samba, AFS).
• Skilled in infrastructure automation tools (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, SaltStack).
• Ability to script/program in languages such as Rust, Perl, Python, Ruby, Bash, C, etc.

Bonus Qualifications

• Knowledge of NFSv4, ACLs, and storage security.
• Familiarity with big data technologies such as Elasticsearch, Cassandra, MongoDB, Spark, or HDFS.
• Experience with web services (Nginx, Varnish, Apache, HA Proxy).
• Understanding of virtual platforms (vSphere, Xen, Docker, or KVM).
• Experience with relational database technologies (MySQL, PostgreSQL, OracleDB, etc).

CompensationThere are three major components to compensation for this position: pay, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary range for this position is $193,000 to $243,000. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The pay range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.
