Job Description

The Custodial Supervisor will manage and supervise night shift custodial services. Provide direct line supervision of nighttime custodial employees.  Establish and monitor work standards and practices. Plan and assign work. Manage the University’s custodial supply inventory.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Supervision: Supervise night shift custodial crew, monitor performance, and set priorities to meet staffing shortages. Counsel staff and manage disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Customer Service: Monitor and maintain good public and inter-departmental relations.  Monitor and ensure scheduling meets daily cleaning requirements, promote efficiency and other organizational values.
  • Management: Prepare and/or process annual reviews, staff changes for payroll, and time off requests. Assess cleaning requirements and plan schedules to meet the needs of the university.  Monitor & procure supplies inventories and equipment needs.

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Staffing: Assists the Custodial Manager in the recruiting, selection, interviewing and hiring of custodial staff.
  • Training: Identify, procure and implement training requirements for new custodial staff and train existing staff on new policy and/or procedural changes.
  • All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).

Work Environment and Physical Demands: 

  • Typical work environment is an office, working at a desk for long periods of time.
  • Frequent trips in multiple buildings around campus inspecting the work of custodial staff.
  • Regular computer use. 
  • Infrequent climbing, crouching, kneeling, pulling, reaching, smelling and lifting.
  • Exposure to irritating substances:  cleaning supplies, etc.
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, mold, dampness, odors: elements requiring cleaning, flood clean up.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Two years training or formal education beyond high school and at least 3 years of relevant full-time experience required. 
  • At least two (2) years of work experience supervising staff.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Computer skills including word processing, email and data management.
  • Custodial Staffing and Standards training preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse work environment.
  • Ability to be attentive to details, be accurate, be precise.
  • Ability to lead/teach; work in a team environment; work independently with little supervision.
  • Ability to show initiative; maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to organize workflow; manage multiple projects; and handle frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to reason/analyze preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate patience, understanding
