Job Description
Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine as a Physics Resident I with our Radiation Oncology Department at our main Hyde Park location.
The Medical Physics Residency Program in the Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology at the University of Chicago Medicine is accepting applications for a Clinical Physics Resident position beginning July 1, 2025.
This CAMPEP-accredited program offers two years of comprehensive clinical training in Radiation Oncology Physics, with an optional third year focused on data-driven clinical work. The program emphasizes hands-on clinical experience and is designed to prepare residents for a professional career in medical physics, with the goal of achieving ABR certification.
The incoming resident will join a dynamic team of 14 medical physicists, including 7 faculty physicists, who are actively engaged in clinical service, teaching, and research. The department also includes 7 dosimetrists, 12 radiation oncologists, 10 medical residents, and 5 Ph.D. cancer biology faculty. While the 24-month program is primarily clinical, participation in teaching and translational research is encouraged. The optional third year offers expanded opportunities for clinical efforts to evaluate novel therapies.
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must hold either:
- A Ph.D. or M.S. degree from a CAMPEP-accredited graduate program in Medical Physics, or
- A Ph.D. in physics or a related scientific discipline, followed by a CAMPEP-approved certificate in Medical Physics.
Candidates completing their graduate degrees in Fall 2025 may be considered; some flexibility in the start date is available.
Clinical Resources:The University of Chicago Medical Center is equipped with four Varian linear accelerators, including three TrueBeam units and a newly installed Ethos system with Hypersight Adaptive RT. Additional equipment includes:
- Varian Bravos HDR afterloader
- Brainlab Exactrac System
- Varian Identify, VisionRT, and LAP Luna 3D SGRT sytsems
- Two wide-bore Philips 4DCT scanners
- Siemens PET/CT (Radiology)
- Low-dose I-125 brachytherapy
- Treatment planning systems: Eclipse, Ethos, Brainlab iPlan/Elements, and VariSeed
The clinic delivers approximately 90–100 external beam treatments per day, with active participation in both institutional and national clinical protocols. Specialized procedures include IMRT, VMAT, ART, IGRT, SBRT, SRS, TBI, TSET, HDR, and IORT. Two of the TrueBeam machines are scheduled to be replaced in consecutive years, providing residents with valuable hands-on experience in equipment commissioning
