Job Overview:
This position is responsible for performing a full range of laboratory tests, confirming the accuracy of test results, and reporting laboratory findings to the doctors, pathologists, or other physicians. This position may work in any of the major areas of the laboratory: Transfusion Service, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology/Immunology, Toxicology, Special Chemistry and Fibrinolysis. This position operates and maintains a variety of laboratory instruments, utilizes laboratory computer system in performance of duties, maintains strict adherence to established policies and procedures, and works under the supervision of a general supervisor, but works independently.
Job Requirements:
Education:
High School Diploma or Equivalent.
Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree with specialized training in Medical Technology or related field.
Current Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification by American Society Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) certification by National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
1 year of MT/MLS experience.
Job Responsibilities:
Maintains specialized knowledge in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, and immunohematology (blood bank and transfusion medicine).
Performs highly complex testing.
Performs technical laboratory analysis in the areas of chemistry, hematology, coagulation, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, and immunohematology.
Performs calibration, correlation, linearities, verifications, and validations per instrument and/or test specifications.
Ability to recognize test abnormalities.
Performs work accurately and thoroughly by being meticulous.
Ensures the distribution of associated test information and results in a manner consistent with department standards, regulatory standards, and turnaround time criteria.
Ensures the proper functioning of laboratory instrumentation by performing required quality controls, maintenance, documentation, and troubleshooting procedures.
Evaluates specimen quality for testing as deemed appropriate per test method.
Demonstrates ability to use the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Contributes to effective customer relations by assisting patients, visitors, physicians to resolve expressed concerns and by demonstrating a welcoming and helpful attitude.
Uses clinical knowledge, technical skills, and professional judgment in accordance with professional and departmental standards and protocols.
Demonstrates personal competency by successful performance of proficiency surveys and department competencies as assigned.
Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal, and The Joint Commission (TJC) regulations related to the Laboratory Department and facility.
Attends all mandatory meetings and is familiar with Laboratory Compliance and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
