About the role

Overview

The Phlebotomist performs phlebotomy functions and non-technical duties in areas including the hospital laboratory, outpatient and off-site services.

Responsibilities

• Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, finger stick, heel stick, and bleeding time) according to established procedure.

• Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.

• Determines priority of STAT draws.

• Ensures timely transport of all patient specimens for testing.

• Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions.

• Helps co-workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments when needed to ensure an orderly workflow.

• Under supervision, helps in the training of new employees and student interns in the performance of phlebotomy duties.

• Follows all organizational and department or unit policies and procedures.

• Attends all required Safety Training programs and can describe responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.

• Responsibly follows the Hospital Exposure Control Plans/Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens.

• Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

• Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives.

• Greets patients and answers phones in the outpatient lab when required.

• Is responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department.

• Records daily temperatures of all refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas.

• Organizes assigned work and accurately completes workload.

• Performs various pre-analytical functions of specimens (collection, labeling, transport, processing), including Custody and Control Drug Screens.

• Assists in keeping supplies at stock level.

• Completes daily log sheets.

• Answers telephones, takes messages, performs related data entry, gives reports, reprints reports, makes photocopies, faxes reports, and files orders.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Complies with all policies and standards.

 

Qualifications

Education

• High School Diploma required.

• Successful completion of an approved phlebotomy training program OR one (1) year of prior acceptable experience in laboratory technique covering at least fifty percent (50%) of the clinical duties required in the job.

Experience

• Up to one (1) year of experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge and skill in phlebotomy and customer service.

• Required to comply with OSHA regulations for N95 respirator training and fit testing.

• Adheres to infection control policies and guidelines appropriate for the work area.

• Practices proper hand hygiene and uses personal protective equipment (PPE) when appropriate.
