This classification is for new fire fighters who are in training to learn the skills and functions of fire fighting under the guidance of an experienced fire fighter.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:*
Position Specific Summary
The Firefighter Trainee position at the City of Tucson’s Fire Department works collaboratively to learn and demonstrate the knowledge and proficiency required to perform specialized work in response to emergency calls to protect life and property. Work is performed under the supervision of a Fire Captain. This position does not supervise.
Duties and Responsibilities
Fire Suppression Training (40%) - Essential
Learns concepts and techniques in numerous areas including fire fighting techniques, fire prevention, fire behavior and fire apparatus and its related equipment through classroom instruction and drill ground scenario-based training. Responds to emergency calls to protect life and property by combating extinguishing and preventing fires. Follows safety protocol by wearing self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing. Maintains and restores apparatus before and after use. Attends continuing education trainings to maintains fire suppression certifications. Performs regular drills to maintain skills in fire suppression.
Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (40%) - Essential
Learns concepts and techniques in patient assessment and the provision of emergency medical care through classroom instruction and scenario-based training.
Physical Training (10%) - Essential
Participates in a comprehensive physical training program targeted to enhance one’s cardiovascular and muscular endurance in addition to improving one’s flexibility.
Other duties as assigned (10%) - Non-Essential
Learns the responsibilities of the other divisions of the fire department that support the mission of protecting lives and property through classroom instruction. Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned. Teaches fire prevention and fire safety at community outreach events. Conducts tours of fire stations for visiting groups. Performs other tasks and duties as assigned
Working Conditions
40-hour per week schedule
• Work environment includes a combination of classroom (indoor) and drill ground (outdoor)
lectures/activities with heavy exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, and intellectual challenges.
