As a Registered Nurse First Assist at MercyOne, you will function as a peri-operative RN who works in collaboration with the surgeon and other health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes through application of the advanced knowledge, judgement, and skills specific to the expanded role of the RNFA.  First assisting behaviors are further refinements of peri-operative nursing practice and are executed within the context of the nursing process.  The RNFA practices perioperative nursing with the necessary knowledge, skills, and judgement specific to clinical practice in collaboration with, and at the direction and supervision of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase.  The RNFA will also demonstrate all functions included in the RN job description. Adheres to MercyOne's performance expectations and performs all defined services and other related duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of MercyOne.

  • Full time 40 hours a week

General Requirements:

  • Performs specific tasks according to individual surgeon preference, utilizing appropriate techniques including, but not limited to: incision and layered closure of surgical sites, providing exposure, achieving hemostasis by means of injection, manual, and topical methods and application of appropriate energy sources, clamping & ligating blood vessels, manipulation and dissection/removal of tissues, aides in implanting, securing and/or removal of devices and drains and applying appropriate dressing material specific to procedure.
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, & sponging techniques.
  • Wound closure as directed by surgeon may include closure of peritoneum, fascia, subcutaneous tissue, and skin.
  • May place trocars under direct supervision of the surgeon only after the first trocar has been inserted by the surgeon. Competency required.
  • Conducts an initial and ongoing assessment to gather and analyze data.
    • Identifies the patient by using 2 identifiers.
    • Assesses physiological health status of patient and communicates/ documents status noting abnormalities.
  • Identifies patient goals and develops them into an outcome based plan of care.
    • Prepares room and equipment based on patient needs
    • Assures all equipment functioning before use.
    • Assigns activities to staff based on their qualifications and patient needs.
    • Coordinates plan of care with ancillary services.
  • Implements an outcome based plan of care.
    • Transports patient.
    • Provides patient/family teaching based on needs.
    • Creates and maintains a sterile field/environment using principles of aseptic practice.
    • Provides equipment and supplies based on anticipated needs.
    • Performs sponge, sharps and instrument counts in accordance to policy.
    • Administers medication in accordance to policy.
    • Assists/monitors patients physiological condition during surgery and initiates actions based on changes.
    • Performs sponge, sharps and instrument counts in accordance to policy.
    • Participates in time out.
  • Evaluates patients interoperative plan.
    • Reassesses intraoperative phase of patient care based on new data.
    • Exercises safe judgment and plan of care and based on ongoing assessments.
  • Communicates relevant perioperative information to the team to optimize patient outcomes.
