Topcon is seeking a highly skilled Sales Tax Manager with extensive experience in sales and use tax compliance and planning to manage all aspects of the company's sales and use tax obligations to ensure compliance with state and local tax laws. This role is critical in minimizing tax liabilities and risks while optimizing tax strategies to support the company's financial objectives.
While the focus will be on sales and use tax compliance the role will also provide support in income tax provision and compliance to the Income Tax Manager and Head of Global Tax.
This role is pivotal in ensuring the company's compliance with sales and use tax regulations while optimizing tax positions to support business growth.
This position is required to be on-site in either the Oakland, NJ, OR Livermore, CA office.
Responsibilities:
Sales and Use Tax Compliance: Oversee the preparation, review, and timely filing of all sales and use tax returns across applicable jurisdictions. Ensure accuracy and adherence to the latest tax laws and regulations.
Assist with the preparation of income tax provisions and income tax returns using One Source tax provision and return software.
Tax Research and Planning: Stay abreast of changes in sales and use tax legislation. Conduct comprehensive tax research to interpret new laws, assess their impact on the business, and develop strategies to capitalize on tax-saving opportunities.
Audit Management: Serve as the primary liaison with state and local tax authorities during audits. Prepare responses, manage documentation requests, and work towards favorable resolutions, including initiating protests when necessary.
Tax Advisory Services: Provide expert advice on the tax implications of new product launches and market expansions. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate tax considerations into strategic planning.
Process Improvement: Develop and implement policies and procedures to enhance tax compliance efficiency and effectiveness. Identify opportunities to streamline processes through automation and technology solutions.
Internal Controls: Establish and maintain robust internal controls over sales and use tax processes. Ensure proper documentation and records are kept to support tax filings and positions.
Training and Mentorship: Train and mentor internal stakeholders and junior tax staff on sales and use tax matters. Promote awareness of tax obligations throughout the organization.
Risk Management: Monitor and mitigate tax risks by reviewing contracts, business practices, and operational changes for potential tax implications. Advise management on areas of concern and recommended actions.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
5 – 7 + years of progressive experience in sales and use tax compliance and planning.
Experience managing tax audits and collaborating with tax authorities is essential.
Proven track record of identifying and implementing tax-saving opportunities.
In-depth knowledge of multi-state sales and use tax laws and regulations.
Proficiency with tax compliance software and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Experience with tax automation tools is a plus.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex tax statutes and apply them effectively.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with tax authorities and cross-functional teams effectively.
