Job Description:  

This is technical position performing complex engineering tasks and duties in a variety of field and office specialties in the Maine Department of Transportation's Region 4 Office. This position serves as a member of the Traffic Department based out of the MaineDOT Regional Headquarters in Bangor, Maine. This position reports to the Regional Traffic Engineer (RTE) and works closely with the RTE and the existing professionals within the Region 4 Traffic Department. 

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Responsible for the review and processing of Highway Entrance Permit applications on State of Maine Roadways.
  • Complete sight distance reviews at new and existing intersections and driveways.
  • Complete the review of Traffic Control Plans (TCP) and Detour Plans. Conduct field visits to verify that construction signage is in accordance with approved plans.
  • Complete bridge load postings and conduct truck classification studies related to bridge loadings.
  • Assist other senior staff as needed with Highway Opening Permits and Utility Location Permits.
  • Conduct site visits of off-site developer improvements on state roadways to ensure compliance with project plans and State standards.
  • Set up traffic data collection equipment and complete traffic speed studies as requested by Region Municipalities and other MaineDOT Departments.
  • Collect data on existing highway geometry, signage, and pavement markings. Provide recommendations for safety improvements regarding existing signage and pavement markings.
  • Assist in the review and coordination of Official Business Directional Signs (OBDS) for compliance with slate standards and installation with Maine DOT Sign Crew.
  • Provide oversight and coordination of use, care, upkeep and repair of all assigned equipment, vehicles and other Department assets.
  • Meet with private citizens, public officials, and others to address concerns and complaints regarding State of Maine highway infrastructure.

Preference will be given to those candidates with knowledge and experience related to the Department's Access Management Rules, conducting driveway and entrance permit reviews, conducting speed zone reviews, Access Management database use and data entry, experience with MaineDOT Map Viewer, familiarity with Utility Location and Highway Opening permit processes and associated field work, as well as proficiency with typical office software including Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. 

To be minimally qualified for this position candidates must provide evidence of the following experience:

Eight (8) years of experience in engineering -OR- a Bachelors Degree in Engineering or a related technical field and four (4) years of engineering experience -OR- an Associate Degree in Engineering or a related technical field and six (6) years of experience in engineering.
