Overview

Under general supervision, the Sanitation Training and Development Specialist is responsible for performing skilled and lead work training Sanitation Truck Drivers on all types of refuse collection trucks. Trains employees to provide collection service to customers on assigned routes, including safely and efficiently collecting garbage and recycling materials, and brush and bulky items. Instructs employees on procedures to transport collected materials to appropriate City disposal or processing facilities and the proper way to operate, maintain, and care for equipment.

Essential Functions

1 Trains and prepares vehicle for daily assignment by performing pre-, during, and post-trip inspections and prepares any necessary reports to include any vehicle malfunctions, which involves frequently lifting and carrying equipment weighing 40 pounds.

2 Maintains personal protective equipment and prepares safety equipment to be used during the workday.

3 Operates automated and semi-automated refuse collection vehicles, and tractor-trailers to conduct new driver training.

4 Conducts remedial training for all drivers involved in motor vehicle accidents or property damage.

5 Conducts in-cab evaluations of all collection truck drivers.

6 Conducts specialized training as directed by department leadership.

7 Conducts route observations in accordance with departmental checklists.

8 Provides staff driving evaluations.

9 Provides direction on safety procedures and use of shortest route to landfill and transfer stations.

10 Educates residents and staff on collection procedures and delivers literature on acceptable and non-acceptable materials.

11 Assists in coaching sessions for drivers identified by in-cab camera systems.

12 Assists in the development of safety-based driver's training curriculum and checklists.

13 Assists in conducting time and motion studies for various collection districts.

14 Assists in departmental presentations and public educational events.

15 Performs environmental inspection of roll-out cart contents as directed by policy.

16 Performs other related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1 Extensive knowledge of the operation of commercial vehicles in accordance with all safety rules, traffic laws, and driving in all weather conditions.

2 Knowledge of regulations related to traffic safety practices, safety procedures, safety rules, and traffic laws.

3 Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

4 Knowledge of vehicle maintenance and ability to troubleshoot vehicle malfunctions.

5 Knowledge of facilities and procedures for operating on the premises of a disposal or processing facility.

6 Knowledge of equipment inspection procedures and maintenance requirements.

7 Knowledge of on-board video systems, such as backing cameras and in-cab cameras.

8 Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.

9 Ability to perform effective customer service, including direct communication with the customer.

10 Ability to coach drivers as necessary to make them a safer driver.

11 Ability to conduct initial and recurring training for drivers.

12 Ability to conduct vehicle inspections and trouble-shoot equipment problems.

13 Ability to understand and follow instructions.

14 Ability to learn City Administrative Directives and Department policies required in the performance of duties; and teach those same policies to new employees.

15 Ability to work in conditions that are primarily outside and subject to inclement weather conditions, to include frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust, damp/wet surfaces, and high noise level.

16 Ability to perform all the essential functions of the position with or without accommodations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Three (3) years of experience in commercial truck driving
