Purpose

Prepare and/or serve specialty coffee drinks or other beverages by following the recipes provided. Responsible for assisting with the training of new staff, cashiering, inventory, upkeep of equipment, and serving/preparing food in University Housing and Dining (UHD) locations.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and/or serve hot and cold beverages and food items such as coffee, espresso drinks, blended coffees, teas, baked goods, grab and go. Prepare food and beverage items according to standard recipes and requested customization.

• Acknowledge, greet, and communicates enthusiastically with customers providing excellent customer service. Suggestively sell items and maintain knowledge of current specials and promotions. Maintain concise menu and product knowledge and ensure customer satisfaction with drink/food quality. Communicate professionally and effectively with staff, supervisory staff, and/or customers. Maintain current knowledge of all areas of responsibility.

• Ensure compliance with food safety and sanitation guidelines. Ensure proper labeling and storage of products. Avoid cross contamination and actively monitor food quality. Properly label and store all perishable food. Check temperatures of freezers, refrigerators, and heating equipment to ensure proper functioning. Maintain a clean and organized work area that may include the coffee shop, bar, lobby area, dining area, patio, and condiment area.

• Assist supervisors with training of new student, temporary, and full-time staff by providing guidance and support. Maintain productivity by utilizing time management skills. Assist with inventory, ordering, receiving, and proper inventory rotation FIFO (first in first out), and stocking of supplies/retail products. Complete daily service records.

• Accurately take and enter customized transactions in Micros (a point-of-sale system), process customer transactions including cash, credit cards, and meal plans, and communicate through abbreviations on cups. Handle monetary fund's correctly, reconcile daily reports, and complete opening and closing documents. Adhere to UHD cash handling guidelines.

• Adhere to written and oral University and UHD policies such as time and attendance and UHD / UT trainings and compliance. Complete and maintain required food safety training, including Texas Food Handler Safety. Follow work safety guidelines and utilize proper PPE as needed. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Experience working as a Café Attendant (Barista) or similar position in a restaurant, commercial, or institutional facility.

• Experience with operating standard beverage and/or kitchen equipment.

• Ability to complete and maintain Food Safety Training required by University Housing and Dining.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

• 6 months or more experience working as a Café Attendant (Barista) or similar position in a restaurant, commercial, or institutional facility.

• Experience working with Starbucks or Pete's Coffee products.

• Experience using a cash register/cash handling.

• Experience preparing drinks in a high-volume/fast-paced environment.

• Ability to multi-task and work with little supervision.
