Job Summary:
The purpose of this position is to lead in operating and maintaining a high-quality physical environment that is dedicated to the success and satisfaction of the Saint Paul College faculty, staff, students and visitors. Working under the direction of the Physical Plant Director, this position is responsible for providing key leadership related to the maintenance and operation of the campus grounds. This position is tasked with maintaining, directing, planning and advising in the maintenance and development of the College’s grounds. In this position you will perform lawn, garden, and road maintenance services. This work will include: mowing; tilling, weeding, and fertilizing lawns and gardens; and determining seasonal plant needs to order necessary seeds, plants and supplies. The incumbent will clear snow and refuse from sidewalks, ramps, parking lots and driveways; operate snowplows, snow blowers, sanding vehicles, and street sweepers; and manually shovel snow. The position works to ensure that grounds and related services operate in accordance with the College’s mission and vision statement, the Minnesota State Strategic Plan, and the President’s work plan.
Job Duties:
Maintain and enhance campus grounds—including lawns, flowerbeds, shrubs, wooded areas, and exterior entryways—by operating grounds equipment, managing landscaping projects, and ensuring safety, aesthetics, and efficiency under the direction of supervisory staff.
Instruct and provide lead work direction to assigned groundskeepers, general maintenance workers, and student workers so that on-going program goals are met. Train and direct all assigned personnel in safety procedures, equipment operation, equipment maintenance and plant/turf maintenance.
Assist with general building maintenance as directed by the Building Maintenance Foreman or Physical Plant Director.
Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner as directed by the Building Maintenance Foreman or the Physical Plant Director.
Comply with Occupational Safety and Health Act, participate in mandatory training, testing and certification. Comply with departmental safety policy.
Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $20.21 - $28.02 hourly.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ability to read, interpret and follow oral and written instructions sufficient to independently complete assignments timely using accepted practices and safe techniques.
Knowledge of horticulture techniques and practices (planting schedules, germination intervals, and transplantation procedures) sufficient to maintain and improve facility grounds/landscape and recognize and/or treat plant diseases and pests.
Groundskeeping experience on a multiple building complex including the care of lawns and woody and herbaceous plants using accepted horticultural practices.
Experience with the safe use of and simple repair of hand-held tools, riding machinery (all types of lawn and landscape equipment), and snow removal equipment (hand and heavier equipment).
Basic knowledge of chemical fertilizer or pesticide application and related safety practices.
Ability to move and transport 40 to 80 pounds and ability to work in inclement weather conditions.
Must have a valid Class D MN Driver’s License at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience providing lead work direction to other groundskeepers and student workers. Ability to prioritize and assign work and to carry out these duties in a safe manner;
Lifting, stair and ladder climbing are involved with tasks to be performed;
Experience or the ability to develop, write and communicate landscape plans and projects, ground repair and improvement projects, and daily work assignments;
