The Pharmacy Technician II assist pharmacists in preparing, compounding, and dispensing medications and are accountable to the supervising pharmacist who is legally responsible for the care and safety of the patients served by the pharmacy. The Pharmacy Tech II follows applicable standards and federal, state & local laws and regulations for the care and safety of the customers and patients served.

Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician II assists pharmacists in preparing, compounding, and dispensing medications while ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This role is accountable to the supervising pharmacist, who retains legal responsibility for the care and safety of patients served by the pharmacy. The Pharmacy Technician II works under the direct supervision of a pharmacist and plays a critical role in supporting medication distribution, inventory management, sterile compounding, pharmacy operations, and exceptional patient care.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong attention to detail, proficiency with pharmacy technology and automation systems, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

Pharmacy Operations

  • Enter and maintain accurate patient and medication information in EPIC and other pharmacy systems as appropriate.
  • Complete department-approved sterile compounding training and prepare sterile compounded medications as assigned.
  • Retrieve, count, prepare, and, when appropriate, mix medications for pharmacist review and dispensing.
  • Accurately fill medication orders and prescriptions in a timely manner.
  • Deliver or dispense medications to patients following pharmacist verification.
  • Prepare medications for shipment, delivery, curbside pickup, home delivery, or other approved distribution methods.
  • Make timely medication deliveries to nursing units and patient care areas.
  • Retrieve unused medications from patient care areas and process credits when appropriate.

Inventory Management

  • Receive, secure, and maintain pharmacy inventory.
  • Order, stock, and replenish medications and supplies.
  • Monitor assigned areas for outdated medications and ensure compliance with quality assurance standards.
  • Follow established hazardous waste disposal procedures.

Patient Care & Service

  • Complete patient follow-up calls as appropriate for assigned responsibilities.
  • Use sound judgment to prioritize tasks based on patient needs and operational demands.
  • Maintain a high level of customer service and professionalism when serving patients, caregivers, and healthcare team members.

Quality & Safety

  • Maintain cleanliness, safety, and proper sanitization of pharmacy equipment and workspaces.
  • Comply with all pharmacy policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support patient safety initiatives and quality assurance programs.

Teamwork & Training

  • Attend departmental meetings, huddles, and training sessions.
  • Participate in onboarding and training of new pharmacy team members.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers and ensure smooth shift-to-shift information transfer.

Orientation, Training, Development & Performance Management

  • Complete all required hospital-wide mandatory education and department-specific competency programs within established timeframes.
  • Successfully complete EPIC training.
  • Participate in pharmacy technician orientation and training programs.
  • Complete all competencies required for assigned pharmacy work areas.

Professionalism

  • Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, excellent communication, and superior customer service in all interactions.
  • Maintain professional and courteous working relationships with coworkers, patients, and providers.
  • Follow dress code, hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE), and appearance standards.

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required.

Licensure

  • Active registration and good standing with the State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician, or willingness to apply for registration by the first day of employment.
  • Must meet all registration requirements, including fingerprinting and FBI background check, as applicable.

Experience

  • One (1) year of relevant pharmacy experience preferred, but not required.
