POSITION SUMMARY:

The Financial Navigator will ensure optimal financial performance for all departments throughout the Cancer Center by acting as a front-line resource for all patients seen within the Center. The goal is to maximize the likelihood of submitting clean and payable claims while advocating on behalf of the patient, assisting them with accessing as many outside financial services as possible to help minimize the burden of cancer care. This position requires that the Financial Navigator create a friendly, cooperative impression throughout all interactions with internal and external customers and works independently to prioritize and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.  Key responsibilities of the Financial Navigator are insurance verification, obtaining and maintaining approval during the course of patient treatment to prevent any delay in patient care.  Patient interaction is an essential part of this position. The Financial Navigator is available to work one-on-one with cancer center patients, helping them to understand their insurance benefits and other available avenues of financial assistance, payment plans, and co-pay assistance programs. The Financial Navigator will provide estimates of the cost of patient’s prescribed treatment regimen and meets with the patient to go over out of pocket expenses upon request.  The Financial Navigator is knowledgeable of all private and government payers; including contract terms, hospital financial assistance and discount programs, and communications with Enloe’s Financial Team as necessary. The Financial Navigator must be able to work within the billing module to answer patient billing questions or direct them to the appropriate person to help them with billing disputes. Must be able to work independently and within a team environment. Interacts frequently with providers, clinical, clerical, and Patient Financial Services staff. 

EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:

Minimum:

  • Two years of medical billing or patient access experience.

Desired:

  • Hematology Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Infusion Therapy Billing
  • One year of Financial Counseling experience in a hospital setting
  • One year of pre-registration and/or insurance verification experience in a hospital setting
  • EMR (Electronic Medical Records) Experience
  • Medical and pharmaceutical terminology

SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:

The incumbent must demonstrate ability to effectively utilize Microsoft office software applications and healthcare A/D/T software applications.  Must have excellent telephone and interpersonal skills to maintain a high degree of rapport with physicians, managers, co-workers, employees, patients and the public.  The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to conduct an effective patient interview to determine financial ability and identify financial assistance options available to uninsured and/or under-insured patients.  The incumbent must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of government and commercial insurance contracts and eligibility and and assist with enrollment processes when applicable. The incumbent must demonstrate a working knowledge of the healthcare revenue cycle.  The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to understand and accurately calculate expected reimbursement on Enloe's insurance contracts within established timeframes. The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to accurately estimate patient out of pocket amounts due at time of service. The incumbent is responsible to maintain accurate and complete account documentation in the electronic patient record. The incumbent must comply with all state, federal and local regulatory requirements.   This position interfaces with all levels of personnel within the hospital.  The incumbent must show sensitivity for the patient and family and maintain strict confidentiality.
