Job Duties
Chesapeake Health Department (CHD)seeks an experienced Registered Nurse to furnishes direction and coordinate operation of CHD’s tuberculosis (TB) and newcomer health program. This public health nurse senior (PHN Sr.) position works collaboratively within the team to provide nursing interventions for some general communicable diseases. The incumbent serves as the expert for the TB and newcomer health program. Program responsibilities include coordination of the TB/Newcomer Health clinic and the TB screening clinic. Routine duties also include disease surveillance, investigation, prevention, and control of reportable communicable diseases of public health significance in accordance with the Code of Virginia § 32.1-116.3. The incumbent will be work to develop innovative approaches to improve TB medication uptake, adherence, and case management services. Conducting assessments and quality assurance reviews to ensure compliance with Code of Virginia mandates and regulatory requirements. Other duties include but are not limited to monitoring medication inventory, proper storage and handling of medication received. Maintaining up-to-date knowledge and providing training to nurses for TB/CD updates, trends and other matters relating to CD. This position does provided direct patient care services, assessments, education, exams, immunizations, and treatments for other public health mandated programs. The position also participates in community outreach activities, community based clinical programs, supports community based prevention activities, cross-coverage for adult immunizations services, and serves as a member of the districts Epidemiological Response Team.
In the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor, public health nurses are required to assume other duties for the districts’ emergency preparedness and response (EP&R) activities, including but not limited to points-of-dispensing (POD) mass vaccination events and shelter coverage. During declared emergencies, this will require an adjustment to work hours, location, job duties as well as participation in trainings to meet public health business needs. Additional potential work-schedule variations include participation in community outreach events and other EP&R assignments, such as communicable disease and epidemiological investigation events and locality emergency shelter duties. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a Registered Nurse by State code.

Minimum Qualifications
Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR, able to be fit tested and perform fit testing for other staff in accordance with OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134) [Ref.2] regulations.
Experience functioning in a leadership role; experience and ability to function independently in the home/clinic/community/school settings and prioritize workload.
Exercises sound nursing judgment; effective verbal, written, interpersonal/physical assessment skills.
Experience and ability to enter, review, analyze data and statistics and produce reports and/or recommendations from such information; ability to work in a fast paced, data driven environment.
Experience and knowledge of nursing process, health maintenance, disease processes, physical and behavioral sciences, case management process and basic principles of epidemiology.
