The laboratory of Dr. Qiang Zhu (zhulab.vai.org) at Van Andel Institute (VAI) is looking for a Research Scientist who is highly motivated to explore disease mechanisms and develop innovative therapeutic approaches in dementia and motor neuron diseases such as ALS.  The results from these studies could lead to the development of novel biomarkers and therapeutic strategies to improve clinical outcomes of FTD and ALS.

FUNCTIONS:

  • Must have ability to independently apply understanding of scientific theory to the structure and execution of research experiments.

  • Maintains an excellent understanding of the theoretical basis of the work being performed and has the ability to clearly communicate those concepts to others, both in oral and written communications. This includes keeping abreast of current scientific literature in his/her area of research interest.

  • Ability to independently identify significant questions/problems, and develop appropriate scientific strategies to resolve these questions. This includes development of appropriate scientific approach, experimental design and execution.

  • Prepares scientific manuscripts, posters, and abstracts. This includes background research, preparation of supporting data, charts, graphs, and text development.

  • May oversee the work of one or more individuals in an Investigators laboratory.

  • Must be able to effectively network with scientific and technical staff to independently add to his/her knowledge and expertise on unfamiliar issues that may be pertinent to the research at hand.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS:
Position requires a doctoral degree from an accredited college or university, appropriate to biomedical research or equivalent, i.e., Ph.D., M.D., D.V.M., D.Sc. Must be at least 6 years post Ph.D. Computers and software applications are required, with an emphasis on graphics and statistical applications.
